Strange Concerta side effects | ADHD Information

Share

Hi,

I am really worried about a side effect that has happened to my boy. His meds have helped for a long time, but the last few months he developed serious facial ticks and eye rolling that cease as soon as his meds wear off. It does not bother me but the kids at school are completely rejecting him becaus eof this strange and visible side effect. Has anyone had this happen in theri kids and what was the outcome. My boy is crushed and his Dr will not reduce his meds, he wants to add more meds! Any advice?

Wow, my son is on concerta and doesn't have any of those side effects. The heck with the dr. i would change his medicine all together. If he won't get a second opinion.

I have heard that stimulant meds such as Concerta can bring out tics in a child with a predisposition for them.  Your son may have an underlying neurological tic disorder that you had not observed.

My son has had tics on and off since age 4.  They will go away completely for months, and then re-emerge during times of stress.  At the time we started him on ADHD med (July) he hadn't had a tic in months.  Within hours I saw a few mild tics come out (throat clearing).  We put my son on Straterra because its considered non-stimulant, which is ideal for children predisposed with tics.  After a few weeks on Straterra, the tics went away - even when we increased the dosage.

I've worried all along about how his tics could make him subject of ridicule, so I am happy to have found an ADHD med that doesn't make them worse (Adderral was terrible for my boy).  You also have to think about the fact that it has to be terribly difficult to pay attention in class with his eyes rolling - so there is good reason to speak to your doctor about a change in his meds.

My son is on concerta also his behavior and impulsive behavior seem to be getting worse at the at home scene any ideas would be greatly appreciated.I was diagnosed with ADHD five months ago. However, I was first diagnosed as bipolar which was two years ago. Five doctors diagnosed me with bipolar and the most significant signs of it were "impulsive." I've heard arguments that the two can share the same symptoms and can therefore be mis-diagnosed. There are many posts in this forum which addresses bipolar mixed with ADHD.

Good luck and I hope this helps.
