I do not mean to sound stupid but what is rebound?  My son has a hard time coming off of meds at night is that rebound?  Sorry I am new to all of this

Hi mom30,

Rebound is when the symptoms while the meds are wearing off are worse than during the unmedicated state. Not a stupid question, but an important one.

So my sons anger episodes while coming off the meds could be Rebound?  What can you do for rebound?

I agree with susieb - my son also was having a hard time on concerta in the evenings after taking it for a couple years. We've switched to Daytrana and I see a big difference.

Good luck to you!

Your son may get used to the med and the rebound might stop. Some parents give a short acting form of the med to ease the rebound period. You might have to look at a different med altogether. Here are a few scenarios that my daughter's doctor discussed with me before starting meds (you should discuss the appropriate ones with the doctor):

Meds work great and there are no side effects-Yeah!

Med works great but there is rebound: 1) See if rebound eases in a couple weeks (or time specified by doctor), 2) if not, add short acting form to help ease rebound, 3) use other med to ease rebound

Med works some and rebound goes away: 1) increase dose and watch for rebound again

Med does not work so great and rebound does not go away: 1) change meds and start again

Finding the right med/dose can be a tough road and I wish you the best on this journey.

Our son had some terrible rebound symptoms in the first week and a half, but seems to have almost none now (began meds October 14th)

It also seemed to me that it helped when I discussed how he felt when the meds wore off with him..he would get crazy and run madly around the house.  I think that he felt "funny" and was trying to make it stop.  After I explained what was causing him to feel funny he seemed to do better with it - in fact, the next night when I saw him begin to act that way I asked if he was feeling funny and what could I do to help him - he said "just sit with me mom".

Good luck!!

My son is on Daytrana, which is a ritalin patch, and because of the fact that it takes two hours to wear off after you've removed the patch, he has no rebound.  It takes 2 hours to kick in as well.  I highly recommend it.  It has helped my son tremendously and he made the A-B honor roll for the first 9 weeks.

Finding the right med is hard.  This is a great place to get info and ideas.  Welcome!
