What is an IEP?
I am wondering have you had him to the ped. for a complete check-up with blood tests. I would actually start there. Then if that all comes back negative go from there. An IEP is an individualized education plan. It is part of federal law IDEA. At LDOnline there is more information on IDEA and section 504. Or go to wrightslaw. The school might find that your son does not qualify because he is doing well achademically but a helpful teacher will still work with you on a behavior plan as described above.
My 6 year old ds is doing wonderfully in school. 100s across the board, he has great friends, very respectful, is not aggressive at all, has a high tolerance for pain, worries about others to a fault, plays sports, a very healthy eater, loves meeting new people....etc...
But, he is very implusive, does everything from reading to playing fast, it has been affecting his school work because as the teacher says it is like his mind is always going. Here lately it is almost like he is manic. Never stops. At school, he fidgets, always tearing paper, intreupts his teacher and other students, My dh and I had a conference today and the teacher was wonderful. She explained that he is not doing things that are endangering himself or being spiteful but just being disruptive by not staying in his seat, talking, not letting others do their work, etc.
I guess what I am wondering if there is anyone out there that has a child that has some of the same characterisitcs as my ds and if so what have you done? homepathic, drugs, change in diet, anything...I am scared for him, he is such a loving and intelligent little boy and I don't want to see him get picked on or feel different from the rest of the class.
Also, we dealt with this same school behavior issues last year.
Any help would be great. Thanks in advance,

My daughter was this way in K and 1st grade; always the first to complete her work and was excelling, but just a little disruptive. By the second grade, she knew what everyone else was doing but never did her own work. In the third and forth grades the increased demands on orgainization and staying on task were taking thier toll. She failed most of the forth grade and developed anxiety, depression and defiance. We got her an IEP that included a behavior plan (this helped in the non achademic areas alot) and placed her on meds for the achademic issues.
I would suggest working with the teacher on a positive reinforcement behavior modification plan (see ogram's marble system for an example-first thread of the parent's board). Work on siting in his seat longer (he might be given something for his hands to fiddle with), not talking through a certain amount of time, etc. See how far this takes him. Here is a long article about behavior, evaluation and accomodations (not all of it applies to your situation but much is helpful):

You can start with the teacher. If you want to make sure the process gets rolling as soon as possible, you should write a letter and send it certified in the mail to the principal. It takes a while for the school to do an eval. They have by law 60 school days from the receipt of your request to do one. So in the meantime, you could go have a private eval done by a neuropsych and bring the results to the IEP meeting. It's hard for a school to refute the findings of an independent eval. School evals aren't very thorough and let's face it, the evaluators aren't necessarily top-notch. If you want to have confidence in the testing results, I recommend a private eval. Also, see
wrightslaw.com
for a ton of information. There is a lot to learn about the whole IEP process. GOOD LUCK!!
I agree. Go and get a private eval. I did not know anything and had not discovered this board yet, and I requested (verbally) testing be done at my son's school in November....it did not get done until February, after several more calls by me to the school psychologist. Then, it took a month to get an app't with the doctor, so it was March before I got treatment for my son.
Good luck
No he has never been tested. His K and 1st grade teachers have implied that we should have him tested because of his inability to stay still. He is very implusive in class. This year's teacher has been really good. She says that he is really smart but he is very implusive and recently been missing instruction because he is not listening or doing things that are intrupting the class. She believes that if he could control his impluses that he would be brillant.

Has he actually been diagnosed with anything? If he is getting 100s across the board, he may be gifted and not getting enough mental stimulation. School may just plain be too easy for him.
Before you really get into getting him on anything, including natural remedies, have the school do a complete educational and behavioral assessment on him. That will show you whether he is rushing because its too easy and acting up because he is bored, or something else.
I have a 5 year old son with adhd and he is in kindergarten. He loves school and absorbs everything he hears. His report card was good except for classroom behavior. He gets mad easy and doesn't take well with change, he only listens to his teacher and no one else, especially someone he does not know. I am getting frustrated because he is having a hard time verbalizing to friends or others that he is mad or upset at them, instead he hits them or yells at them. He was sent to the principles office for hitting a kid in the eye and leaving a mark. This is the first time in the office. I am afraid it will get worse, any suggestions????? I ask him why he does things but he always says that he doesn't know or eventually makes something up. Help, we are getting frustrated and hope that others going through this can help.
