I had Chases parent teacher conference tonight and it went soooo well!
I was sure his grades were good, (we just got grade cards a week ago) but I was worried that his organizational habits may still be lacking. He had a detention awhile back for not remembering to turn in his homework in homeroom ( a new rule for this year that he had a hard time remembering), he always had the work done when the teacher asked for it, he just hadn't turned it in.
Anyhow, his teacher basically told me that Chase is doing very well, and it seems that the homework thing has worked itself out....he remembers mostly. He still has above 90% in all of his classes and 99% in math and spelling. Spelling seemed to be the one that jumped immediately after he began meds last year, and I don't think that he has missed a spelling word since.
He also told me that "Chase is such a good boy".
Chase did get upset today at school because the teacher left the room to make copies of some paper, and took longer than he expected. When he got back, another teacher was in the room. Chase and 2 other children had gone to get her when the room got out of control in his (the teacher's) absence. The teacher admitted that he was a little embarrassed that the children could not be good while he was gone. Apparently when the room got too loud, Chase told the other kids that he could not concentrate or get any work done in the noise. When they did not quiet, he slammed the covers of his book together to get their attention. After that, Chase and 2 girls decided to go and get adult help.
I am proud of him for his problem solving, and it must have been loud enough to bother the 2 girls as well. Chase said that all of the children were mad except for the 3 boys that would not be quiet.
So, hopefully we have this thing licked at leaast for now!
chasesmom7939030.7787152778That's great, chases! You have a lot to be proud of.
I am so happy for you! You have a very smart little boy. Thats definitely something to be proud of. Tonyas
One of the hints that I read that was interesting was to stuff the pill into a mini marshmallow....which makes it taste good and forms a barrier aroud the pill , giving the child a good taste while they are working on learning to swallow.
Chase started swallowing pills at a young age..about 5, his allergy med was a tiny pill, Zyrtec..his brother also took it and he wanted to be like big brother, but before he was good at it, and for larger pills up until about a year ago, I would get a good spoonful of pudding or yougurt and plop the pill on the top, then have him open wide and scoop it in. Somehow he could get it down easily this way.... good luck
Chase was funny when I asked him why he got upset at school today once I got home from the conference. He told me the story, then he went into this monologue about how EVERYONE knows that "at least 20% of people in any group need it to be quiet to get their work done!" Not sure where he got that statistic, but it was amusing...he's such a little man
It is so comforting for me to finally have Chase working to the potential that I always knew him to be capable of. He is also so much happier, and confident, because we are not having to stand over him to get him to accomplish everything..he is so much more independent in his homework, able to get through the little he brings home each night w/o too much help.
He said that most of the class was also upset w/the troublemaker boys....he just was the most vocal about it...wonder if the teacher told the other parents too at conference..
Thanks everyone and I hope that your conferences will go as well!
That's awesome. I am actually curious to have our conferences next month. By then my dd will have been on meds for 1 month....she starts tomorrow. We have been practicing pill swallowing with tic tacs & it hasn't went over well. She is really nervous about choking
. They are time release so they have to go down whole. Poor kid.
Anyway, back to Chase.......wooooooo hooooooo
That's great! Way to go Chase!!
