DO YOU STILL MEDICATE WHEN SICK?? | ADHD Information

I think this depends on the type of medication that your child takes...I would not give my child his medicaiton ( he takes Adderall) if he was sick. He had strep a few weeks ago and did not take the med until he was feeling better.

I had this same question when he took strattera because that is one that is not to be started and stopped ...I suggest that you call your doc

I agree with Joemom. If my son was with something other than the common cold, allergies, ect I would stop his meds as long as stopping them would not cause him any discomfort. I think it is probably best to ask your doctor first. If it is a common ailment and he could still play, attend school, be himself I would keep given it to him. But if he was in bed all day with the flu, ect, I probably would not give him his meds. It's always best to check with his doctor first. I hope he is feeling better real soon.the only time i would stop meds is if a child is on stratera and the child is having stomach issues.  The med interruption is not good for their little systems.  their bodies are used to having some thing to "line them out" and taking that away can make them have with draws and that is the last thing they need when they are sick.  the stratera can and does cause stomach discomfort.  You should contact your child's doctor with this question.  If your child needed a medication for a heart condition, you would continue medications, so this is some thing you should really discuss with your child's dr.

Sorry I didn't mention that my child is on strattera.  I think that it is not a good idea to stop it because as I have learned it can produce mood issues if the system does not have it in the regular amount.  Then if I stop strattera for a few days, imagine the fact that I will have to wait again for it to kick in (how long?...). I don't think that in at least my case it  is a good idea to stop  medication for being sick, unless it is something really serious and that the doctor suggests.  My son doesn't have stomach problems related to strattera, eventhough at the beginning of the treatment he did. In these cases it is best to always ask the doctor.

I really think this is an interesting thread, so keep posting!!

for common cold I would see no problem but anything else I would not and would check with the doctor first to be safe.

My 9 year old has been sick with a fever, throwing up, etc since last thursday. I have been wondering if I should still give him his adhd meds. I have been but thought I would post the question for other's input. Part of me feels guilty because he doesn't eat so great, but another part of me feels it's the right thing to do. What do you all do??

Thanks for the responses!

I had the experience of just a common cold with my son. I didn't interrupt the medication but as I also gave him some nasal congestion syrup I noticed that he bacame very very sleepy and drowsy (this was unusual for him before being on medication), so I called that doctor and he told me not to interrupt the med and not to give him any cold medication. Just wait that the cold took its natural course and only use tylenol when it was necessary.

If I were you I woud not stop the med and woud make sure that at least he drinks a lot of fluids like fruit juice, apple is the best for throwing up cases I would say. Anyway, you can also call your doc and ask because this is an unpredictable situation and you must know what to do.

Good luck and I hope that your son gets better.
