IEP Meeting went well | ADHD Information

So, we had a meeting regarding M's IEP this morning.  It went very well - what warmed my heart most was that the face of each person there seemed to light up as they discussed M.  They each went through their general observations and testing results where applicable...and then each of them would say "I just have to tell you about...." and then they would relate something special that they saw M do or heard him say to another child or the teacher.

They all seemed to really think that he is a very special little boy, and they all had very good reports regarding his behavior and attention since he has been on the meds , and it has really only been 2 1/2 weeks since we feel we have gotten to the right dose.

To that end...they don't feel that he needs an IEP right now.  They could possibly qualify him for some help because he is lagging a bit academically, but his teacher feels strongly that he will catch up within the normal classroom setting since he is able to focus and participate now.  The psychologist brought up that it may be better to qualify him now, and then end it later if not needed - but they were concerned that he has such a strong positive relationship with his 4K teacher right now, and it may not be better for him to start working with a different teacher on the things he needs to catch up on - they felt that his regular teacher could probably teach him best.

We do plan to do a 504 plan for him...listing any classroom modifications that they are making for him, to follow him to 5K.  I told them that I am very comfortable with him in the 4K setting - I think that they are doing everything in their power to help him to succeed, but that could change with a new teacher when he goes to 5K, so they thought that the 504 plan was the best way to address that concern.

All in all...very very positive.  the principal said that early in the year, as the kids came in from the bus, she would hear "M did this or M did that" because he was out of control on the bus - she doesn't hear that anymore.  They also talked about how kids that used to shy away from him because he was so impulsive are coming back - they want to be by him and do the things he is doing.

I hope that things continue to go well for him!  As scared as I was to put him on the meds, it is obvious that they are helping him tremendously.

Good to hear. It is great when the team really wants what is best for the child. I am also happy to hear how well he is doing.I love it when the teachers so obviously like and care about a child who has special needs. I'm so glad the meds are working so well for him.
