My son was given a Rx for Dexedrine 10mg and told to compare it to the Concerta he is on. He just started taking it today.
I was wondering about others' children's experience with this drug that has been around for a LONG time.
It's very cheap too. A couple of generics are available.
Please post your child's experience. Side effects?
tonyas' daughter started on this med about a week ago...here is the thread

If you have more questions, I am sure that you can send her a Private message to ask...sounds like seh is doing well on it though
If you don't mind my asking...are you talking 'cheap' without insurance..or with? My husband started on a trial of Concerta last week, and we aren't sure if it is going to do the trick..I would be interested to know how this one works in comparison to Concerta..so keep posting and let us know.
Thanks
Hi there. My 7yo dd just started on Dexedrine 10mg on the 10th. So far, it has been great! The only side effects we have seen so far are loss of appetite (she said she had a little stomach ache), but that has been going away & she is actually eating. She's not to hungry at lunch, but does good with breakfast & dinner. She eats breakfast before taking the med. The only day she really had any rebound from it was on the first day, she got really hyper & would not listen, but know I can't really tell when it is wearing off! The first day that she took it, she had a bit of trouble falling asleep, but the next night & still she goes right to bed around 8:00 & falls asleep within 15 minutes & sleeps all through the night until 7:00 am!! I noticed a drastic change in her behavior the very first day (for the better). Her teacher & everyone else is saying that she is so much more focused & not hyper! Even she has noticed the change. So, all in all, for her it has been a great experience!! Good luck to you & keep us posted. Mom, my son has not taken dexedrine but he does take Adderall and this is in the same family of meds (Amphetamines). Adderall is mixed Amphetamine Salts. This meds works great without many side effects. Sorry cant be more specific on the Dexedrine. joemom39040.250787037We have great insurance but Concerta, Focalin, and Adderall all cost per month for 30 pills. The 60 -10mg Dexadrine pills cost me .
Thanks for the reply with link.

Hi! My son has been on Dexadrine 15mg and the only real side effect has been a loss of appetite. He has been doing really well on it. And we too went through a ton of different meds. And some of them really were expensive. I also have insurance, but it was like you said - for a one month supply depending on which med you were prescibed. Good luck to you, I hope it works out for you too!
Hi! My son was on Dexedrine for 4 1/2 years. He is 10 now. The results were good during the school hours, he was on task and could concentrate. The problems were after school and the rebound effects, also the trouble with sleeping and night waking. We had to give him Melatonin at night so he could have a good night's sleep. He started out with the 5mg tablets, one in the morning and one at lunch time. Then he was switched to the longer acting 10mg SPANSULE, to be taken only once per day in the morning. The rebound effects and moodiness was continually getting worse. We tried Adderall, and Concerta and didn't have any luck with those either. After a med free summer we decided that he was a much happier child (although very silly) than he was when he was on the Dexedrine. Back to school in September we decided he should go back on the meds after having a few bad reports from the teacher, but then back to the moodiness as before. The Dr. then switched him to Strattera, a non-stimulant. He has been on them for just about 4 wks and having pretty good results so far. I am just concerned about any side effect that might crop up in the future. It's a waiting game at this point. Anyway, thought I would share my experience with Dexedrine.
Well, I told you I'd get back to you!!
So, far Dex. spans. are MUCH more effective than the methyphenidate CR!!!! I got two hours of sleep the first night, slept well the second night, and last night got about five hours of sleep(had trouble falling asleep).
I don't feel very hungry.....the only things I really enjoy putting in my body so far is yogurt and Slim Fast when my stomach is burning and gurgling for food. I have to force myself to eat solid food sometimes.
I have dry mouth, a mild headache sometimes, and I noticed I clear my throat alot. Also, at night when I lay down and try to sleep.........I feel the need to swallow hard and often.
But, these side effects...to me.....are mild and tolerable. The benifits I'm seeing already outwiegh the side effects for sure.
I feel more calm generally.........though I have my moments!!
My brain even feels like it's relaxed!!! (aside from the headaches)
All in all........Dex is soooooooo much more effective than Ritalin SR. Also, I was really cranky on ritalin and already see that Dex doesn't do that to me. I think ritalin made me a ornery bitch!!
I'm gonna be starting dexedrine spansule 15mg 2x a day tomorrow......I'll keep you posted on how I'm doing.
