Excessive Talking? | ADHD Information
Has anyone's child had excessive talking? My 6 year old son has been on Adderall 10 mg for a little over a week. We didn't see much difference so we gave a double dose yesterday which is what the Dr. said to do. Within an hour after the dose, he started following his father and me around the house talking non-stop like he was obsessed. Every time I tried to tell him to stop talking he would get upset and cry. (Very touchy!) I went back to 10 mg today and called the Dr. They said to go to 15 mg. for another week or so and see if it helps.Adderall did the same thing to my 6 year old little boy. He was an emotional wreck on Adderall, very prone to crying and he seemed to be easily frustrated. We also experienced the excessive talking. It was like he had such clarity of thought and he could retain new thoughts to talk about after he got done his current line of thinking. He was incessant - he followed us around too and wouldn't let up - it usually started around 4:00 or so and lasted well past bedtime. He was also very edgy on the Adderall. We ended up taking him off of it and we have started Focalin with some better luck although not altogether wonderful - we are having some bigtime rebound issues in the afternoon and trouble with sleep. Know that you aren't alone! Maybe it will just take a few days to adjust to the upped dose? Good luck!

Adderall made my son a weeping puddle by the middle of the afternoon, and he was on the extended release form. Not all meds treat everyone the same. Have you tried anything else? After you finish this trial (or decide that it's not got you) ask to try something like Focalin XR or another stim. Your dr should be willing to trial a few to see what's the best fit. I agree with SteppingStone. I'm surprised that a Doctor would do a jump from 10-20. 10-15 didn't work for us. I can't imagine what could have happened on 20. I haven't heard of jumps of more then 5 mg. esp. for a younger child. I WENT FROM A SHY KID TO ONE OF THESE. I feel that upping the dose of a medicine that is making
a child more hyper doesn't make any sense. If it isnt' calming him
down, why give him even more? We had a bad time with Adderrall.
My daughter is a non-stop talker with or without meds. She did go throught a weepy period for about a month after starting Adderall XR. However, this subsided after awhile. The jump from 10 to 20mg may have been too much for your son. Our doctor has always increased her by 5mg at a time.Adderall 10 worked well for my son, but going up to 15 actually made him hyper and teary. We went back to 10. The meds. cut down on his excessive non stop talking. He is 8. My son is a non- stop talker when the med wears off...I think this is more typical then described above. Sorry you are having such trouble. This med may not be the one for you. It took us a year and a half until we found the best med for our ds with the fewest side effectsit depends on my girls day and she is off meds. so far this year.
Adderall XR had that effect on my dd. She talked for hours and hours. She will still talking while she was taking a shower! Her pupils were dilated - round as saucers! And she kept telling me her head really hurt. It was scary! She didn't fall asleep till almost midnite. I hated that stuff.
