does anyone have the problem with their meds wearing off after 5-6 hours??

My son is on 30mg of Metadate CD and it seems to be wearing off after about 5-6 hours.  I can tell because he becomes STARVING.  When he is on and it is in his system he does not want to eat ANYTHING.. It is fine on the weekend , but his day is a very long one.. Starts 8:30- 4:00, any suggestions?

Many people use a small dose of a quick acting stim administered in the afternoon (3 or 4 PM) to help with the problem of the med wearing off too soon...if you can tolerate his behaviour off the meds however, I would not do anything...it is good for him to eat since no appetite is a major problem with the stims.

Sometimes a larger dose is all that is needed to make the med stay in the system for that little extra time.

My son is on Concerta, and at 36mg, it wears off at about 5 or 6 PM.  Once it is out of his system, he frustrates easily and cannot complete his homework, or get along with the family.  Minor things send him into tears and anger.  On 54mg, it lasts until shortly before bed at 9 PM.

thanks for the reply.  We tried concerta, first 27, then 36, and finally 54.  None of them were good for my son, he felt soooo.....wierd .. complained that he couln't take the feelings in his head and really didn't eat AT ALL.. we went back to medadate which seems to work without any wierd reactions.. i'm afraid to increase or switch because of his reaction to concerta.  it was really scary for me and especially for him! My son was on the Metadate CD first 10 mg. then 20 mg. we never got anymore than 4 hrs. at most. We are now on Concerta 27mg. and it actually last about 10 to 11 hours which is good. Also on the Metadate CD he seemed to have such a terrible rebound when it wore off but on the Concerta he doesn't but his appetite is not very good on the Concerta.

Our first try with a stimulant was last May.  DD is 10.  The Doctor tried 18 mg of Concerta, no results at all so increased the dose to 36 mg...still nothing at all.  We stopped that one.

About 3 weeks ago, she began Metadate CD.  He wanted her to try 20 mg. the first week, then increase to 40 mg.  When she took 20 mg. it lasted approx. 4.5 to 5 hrs.  Once we increased to 40 mg. it is consistantly lasting 5.5 to 6 hrs.  Not very long for a long acting med., huh?   Her Neuro. said we could either add a 10 mg. Metadate at school when the first dose wore off, or add a 5mg. Ritalin when she gets home from school, to help w/ homework.  We will begin the 5 mg. Ritalin soon.

The Metadate works really well for her....except for the duration.
