Strattera side effects in adults | ADHD Information
To cut to the chase, do the side effects of Strattera ususally get better with time or worse with time?
Thanks for any responses!
From my experience, I'd say they get better with time.
For those of you with experience taking strattera, I have some questions.
I
am a male in my mid 30's diagnosed with ADHD. For the last several
years I have been taking Ritalin. It worked well for years but lately
it does not help as much as it used to.
My doctor is now having me try Strattera. I am to take it once a day in the evening.
I took 25 mg for 7 days and have now gone to 40 mg. I have taken 40 mg for only a couple of days now.
Within a couple of days of starting the 25 mg. tablets, I noticed that it seemed to be working, but with these side effects:
- dry throat --this was worst on the 1st day and then gradually got better.
- somewhat decreased interest in sex--enough to concern me but not enough to worry me.
-
made me into more of "morning person." I've always been a "night owl"
who would have trouble following a normal sleep schedule: I wold have
trouble going to sleep at a reasonable time and trouble waking up in
the morning and then be very groggy for the first hour or so. Now it's
easier for me to go to bed in the evening and easy for me to wake up in
the morning. And I wake up feeling more alert. I like this side effect!
At 40 mg for a couple of days, I notice:
- feeling a strange "drugged" feeling. I am not as alert as I was at 25 mg.
- much decreased interest in sex. And sex is not as "fun" anymore.
Both
of these are big problems, if they are permanent. But I've been told
that I need to try Strattera for several weeks in order to receive all
the benefits.
If I continue taking 40 mg., can I expect reduced
side effects as my body adjusts to the higher dose? Or should I expect
the side effects to stay the same or get worse?
Should I continue taking 40 mg, or got back to 25?
Is strattera an amphetamine or not? I always get confused about the choices out there. I heard the full effects of strattera take a few days or weeks to kick in? Waking up alert sounds positive to me - i don't get outta my fog until i take my meds and then the rebound at night is horrible for the hyper side of me. Does strattera cover you 24/7?
I am on concerta and it worked the day i got the dose right and i had some side effects that wore off with time, but never a problem with sex drive?
Strattera is not an amphetamine.
I'm an adult (well...a college student if you count that as an adult!)
who was on Strattera (80mg, and I'm a 100lb female) for 3 years. I
really liked it until it started to not work anymore. My side effects
(mainly dry mouth) lasted for a month or so and then gradually
decreased. It takes a while, but they do lessen quite a bit.
hi adhd ed,
I'm curious how you are doing on the Straterra. I'm considering whether I
should try it but I'm nervous about the side effects. Are you still taking it?
I have been taking Strattera 40 mg twice day for about a year and a half now. I'm starting to see long-term side effects. I have a yellowish tone to my face especially under the eyes, problems sleeping, and am not interested in sex at all. I have made an appt with my doctor because it is time for change in meds.
Well, I started Strattera a couple weeks ago and I haven't had any side
effects other than some sleepiness in the beginning.
I didn't respond well to stimulants plus they didn't actually help the ADD
so this is my only option. Thank you Kathy for your input. Those side
effects aren't encouraging but I could live with those since I don't really
have any other choices at this time.
The very very good news is the Strattera is working extremely well for me.
The ADD symptoms just lifted right away. I think I'm a little less
interested in sex but it isn't too bad right now. Also, I think the winkie is
a little smaller but I can live with that. I'm just glad I have something that
works.
Thank you very much for your input.
It's so strange how the side effects affect different people. I have never tried Adderall so I think I'm going to ask my doctor about prescribing that and maybe also with an antidepressant for my anxiety and moodiness.
By the way, my Strattera went up to a month.......talk about expensive. I hope whatever new meds I end up taking will not be so expensive.
Wish me luck!
