ADHD & Aspergers Syndrome
I am new here & not sure if Im doing this right or not.So if I have made an error please forgive me. I have a 15yr old son with a diagnosis of Aspergers,& ADHD. Right now we are using Concerta,Gabitril,& Risperdal & we just had to up the dosage on Concerta,& Riperdal. I wanted to know if any one else here has a child with this diagnosis,& if a lot of days are bad for their child? He also has a diagnosis of ODD,& is a victim of abuse from a family member. Debbie I don't know much about "Autism" but I found some "symthoms" of it in my son (who by the way is diagnosed with ADHD) Are this two disorders related or the could be combined? All this is so confusing? I have noticed that doctors like to stay with their first diagnosis, even if the "symthoms" or "signs" are, also, present in other disorders. At least, in my experience, they don't even consider it, unless I mention it to them. Has this happens to any of you?
Good Luck!!! Yes, adhd usually isn't alone from what I have read. The following can co exist Autism ,Teurettes, Epilepsy, Anxiety, Si issues, and Bipolar.Because my 15yr old was suspected of having Autism theydid some testing on him.In our family history I have an older son who has Autism. So it was a pretty good guess that my 15yr old also has it which he does. My experience with doctors has been for me to be the advocate in my son's life. Most doctors my son has seen just want to get them in & out & bill the insurance for their money,or run unecesary tests over a matter of days.Which was not only annoying for my son but us as well. Yes no one would have even checked into the Autism if I hadn't asked the doctor to do it.The same with his meds,if I want them increased, lowered,or changed I have to suggest it to the doctor. But I think the only person who can be your childs best advocate is you.Your the one who knows your child the best,& you can have the loudest voice in his treatment. And there will be times you will have to have a very loud voice too. Ask your doctor to test for
Autism it's a painless test for your child,& it will give you a way to narrow down what is wrong with your child. Yes with my son besides Autism,he also has epilepsy, which is also hereditary[his sister has epilepsy also] My son, age 6, was dx last summer with Aspergers, ADHD, ODD and OCD. I believe what happens is that they deal with their frustrations with Aspergers through defiance, hyperactivity, low self-esteem, ect. I changed my son's diet (read my 3 Threads that go back as far as Feb. 26th) and he hasn't been defiant, his obsessions appear to be gone for the first time in his 6 years of life and he's less emotional. I do still see some signs of Aspergers, and we'll deal with that, but he doesn't seem to have ADHD, ODD or OCD any longer. I do believe those conditions arose from his frustrations/stress. Now there's less frustrations/stress, and he's eating a much healthier diet. We're going on 6 months now - and no one can believe the difference in him!!! VickiLE Diet alone and supplements didn't make much difference. Autism I have been told no Glutin foods. Thanks for the heads up about Gluten .What kinds
of foods is it found in? Megan- My son who is 9 has a dual diagnosis of ADHD/ Aspergers Syndrome. The Aspergers is very mild and we may do a re- evalation to determine if the Aspergers is a correct diagnosis. He was first diagnosed with ADHD at age 5 and Aspergers at age 6. I would love to share our story with you and what medications we are using with our son, but right now I have a very hectic day lined up. I will write back ASAP. My email is Nodakinoz@hotmail.com. Kate Megan- Sorry I haven't responded sooner. We have tried quite a few different meds with our son including Strattera. We didn't see any improvement with his impulsivity with the Strattera, so now we are going back with Concerta. I think the only thing we haven't tried is Adderal and that is not available in Australia where we live. ( I am American) Like I said before, our sons Aspergers diagnosis is very mild and he may not even have it. He does exhibit behaviors that are not typical ADHD, so he does have something else, I think one dr called it PDD. Pervasive Development Disorder. I need to do more research on that. How old are your children? Please email me with any other specific questions. My two children have a diagnosis of high functioningautism, however my younger son also has the co-diagnosis of ADHD. I was curious if there are any other parents who have the same, and what have your experiences with medications have been. We have gone the SSRI/methylphenedate route as well as currently trying Straterra. My son is on 50mg once a day. We have seem an array of behaviors so far. Megan |
