counseling - how long | ADHD Information

My son has been seeing a therapist since he was 3 (he's now 8).  We've stopped and started, but always end up back there.  I think the longest we've stopped was almost a year.  She typically will see him weekly, and then after a few months we'll start going every other week.

It can get to be a hassle and when things are going well it can be hard to see the need for it.  I'd talk to the counselor about cutting back to every other week, but since it's only been since August he may feel that it's too soon- I think we usually go weekly for about 6 months before cutting back.

Also look at the reasons you son has for not wanting to go.  We discovered the reason my DS didn't want to go anymore was that we had started scheduling the appt. for right after school.  Unfortunately this messed up my son's afternoon routine of getting off the bus and spending the next hour blowing off steam in the backyard.  I felt like an idiot for not thinking about his routine when setting it up.

jaderrock54 great advice...

I noticed the same thing with my son.  If I took him right after his nap at school (which usually ended at 2:00 during preschool) he usually had a difficult time and didn't want to go.  If I waited til 5:00 he loved going.  Now he doesn't get a nap in private kinder except for maybe 30 minutes.  I don't seem to have the same problem.  I however try to schedule around what I think will work for him best.

If he has improved satifactorily, and does not want to go every week, I'd just call and say that I want to switch to bi-weekly. Too bad if his program is weekly, he needs to be flexible. The therapists will let it go on and on and on. There's always some issue to work on...as far as I can tell, you need to call the shots on when it ends or it never does. Our DS-7 has been in counseling since August,he sees a guy who specializes in ADHD, the dr. is very good, DS sees him every Tuesday at 7;30 am before school. It is helping alot for the whole family, question how long do they go weekly ect.. DS doesn't want to go every week. I can see him going every other... but, this guys program is weekly... The doctor has been great with the school, so it has been worth the money.. I am trying to figure out medical expenses for next year...

My son went weekly for about 1/2 year and now bi-weekly for what has been about 9 months.  We are moving to tri and then monthly eventually.  I know that it is costly, but it has been money well spent.  I've seen so much positive from him going.  He is doing just awesome and it makes me so happy to see him happy on a consistent basis.

Everybody is different thus I'm sure timelines are probably different for everyone.  I went myself for a while and started feeling like I had accomplished what I wanted.  However, recently I've started thinking I should go back.
