To "be" ADD or to "have"

I "have" ADD. I think I am definitely much more than my ADD. In fact, ADD has been a major hindrance to my passion and creativity. ADD doesn't make me creative. I am creative because of who I am and taking meds helps me to get the thoughts in my head onto paper. And I am a free thinker because of who I am emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually. My husband has always been a think-outside-the-box kind of guy, and he is not ADD. Also having ADD doesn't make us all smart. Years ago I worked in a school that was 95% kids with autism or ADD and there where smart, average, and not so smart kids with ADD there. I think it close-minded to say that everyone with ADD is less than those of us with ADD. In fact, I think that is what is wrong with the world. People can't see past our issues to recognize the good in us all.
Hi all :)

Thank you for your answers :)

Personaly I prefer to use "I AM" because I see it more as a personality than a disorder. The ADHD is a big part of me and made me what I am to day. The docters call it a disorder...thats their way to categorice us. To giv us a box to work from.

To say "I HAVE" I feel like its something from outside...something I have not yet accepted to be a part of me, and accepted to be a part of me the rest of my life. I do not yet feel proud by saying "I HAVE". Thats how I feel :)
Its like saying im stupid, I WILL become more stupid. By saying "I HAVE" The ADHD will have difficulties to be intergrated.

Ladies and gentleman. May I have your attention.
Excuse me please not for being obnoxious again.
There is  "some" truth in what I said.
(how much ? )
There are people without ADD  who also are very inventive and creative. I just don't feel non-ADDers are necessarily the better human beings than us Da Freaky types.  Non Adders can serve a greater purpose too.
Hmmmm ............................................................ ..
....let me think.......thinking.....thinking....thinking. I'll let you know.

There.   I provoked. Oh goody. Now I feel better.
OK I got it. Non ADDers are there to keep us in line.
(the brain washing line ?)
to keep us from crossing the LINE ?
to make us keep track of the time ?
to make sure we follow the sign ?
to guarantee our minds free of grime ?
so that we may exhibit manners sublime ?
because free thinking may be labeled a crime ?

Hey it just sounds good !!!
It's like admiring a new boob job in the mirror THAT WENT TERRIBILY WRONG.  I have to talk them pretty to convince myself the money spent was worth it.

No , I am pretty serious about my feelings and hunches.
Just not sure because it never happened.( ADDers RULE-ing that is.) or do they ?

Talking to myself again.
Miss is keeping me company in me  M-ADD brain at least for now.
I totally understand now where you are coming from and I thank you for explaining your position to me. It makes sense.
Your graciousness and acceptance of my perspective artemis  is admirable. Thank you.

The battle is on more than one front. Yes many of us have to battle our way through life because our brain is a tad different. This is the external but minor front.  I do not purpose to conquer the World by any means, nor do  I think I am any better than any one else.

The primary revolt is not with the non-ADDers of the World only many of their social messages. The place of resolution is within our individual being. The struggle is not to obtain dominance that will either happen or it will not . . . . the thing to over come for each of us is self contempt the desire to be “not us” The prize is self acceptance, followed by acceptance of others. This underlies every aspect of not only my ADD treatment but the corner stone of much of my personal being.

Between being the out cast “space cadet” , “Air Head”, “Ding-Bat” and being the one who accepts and embraces the difference our biology brings is several emotions. . . . one is a tendency to compensate for all the negative we have had shoved into our minds. . . . .by focusing on our strengths. It is normal and as long it remains within reason healthy.
And just for the record. I do not see non adders as my foes. They are like the wife to ADDers. Keep your routine going, socks and shirts clean, make sure you get a decent meal and don’t let you forget your anniversary
A most excellent observation despite it is made “off the cuff” it is none the less valid.

In my opinion we are part of an eco system. We need non-ADDers and they need us. Weather we are talking on-line message boards or the development of language we are drawn together for one reason or another. In this case we are all drawn here because we are ADD. The group is formed via or similarities however having common ground will get a group to mediocre at best.

A group thrives off the diversity of it’s individuals. . .  language became important because people who saw things differently we able to communicate those differences and use them to propel the community forward. It was the diverse abilities which enables a society to thrive.

A simple example I have used frequently

If all humans were farmers we would still be traveling by hoarse and buggy, lighting our homes by oil lamps . . . the apitimy of medoricity! We developed this ability to communicate in real time with people on the other side of the planet because of inventors creative people who can not farm . . . they were never biologically designed to.

How ever if all were inventors we would all starve to death, no one would be growing food. The practice  of aquiculture is how man kind has been able to feed the masses of people alive to day. Farmers were never biologically designed to be inventors. . . .

It is only when farmers and inventors came together and accepted each other differences that society has thrived. Wars are produced by a fear of diversity . . .  fearing diversity is destructive. . . . . embracing it is where it is at folks just take a look and the volumes of history available at our finger tips. . . . .

Thanks for reading . . . .now what was I supposed to be doing? I don’t think this is it. . . . oh yea Christmas gift card see if I can buy one line (nope no ADD round here)
while we are out hunting.........what are we hunting anyways
The bloomin car keys we had five minutes  ago! –LOL!

Maybe this is why we ADDers are always hunting for the stuff we had five minutes ago -  because we are hunters! (duality if you please)

Well since I invisioned us being American Indians, and from all the films you see of them in the winter. I think we should look for some pants.

SHHHHHHHH!!!! We huntin fo wabbits.

Me-Imp       I see what your saying and give it validation (I'm trying to use big words but I'm saying I agree), but I can't help but think I'm in an X-men movie. You know the whole mutunts rising up against normal people thing.

Viva La Revelution!!!

i agree Parduse.
And I agree w. me imp ,boredom aversion.i love that.
and if they are trying to conform us to their ways then it is a form however subtle of aggression. So yes there is a battle that is going on.It just is not perceived that way. And we are the minority.
it is interesting to contemplate what the world would be like if we were the majority.
And just for the record. I do not see non adders as my foes. They are like the wife to ADDers. Keep your routine going, socks and shirts clean, make sure you get a decent meal and dont let you forget your anniversary

while we are out hunting.........what are we hunting anyways

Imagine Having No Imagination

worldisround39072.6175462963

World, to answer your earlier question. IMHO, If the world was run by ADDers we would still be technically advanced, but society would be structured more like the american indian tribes were. Within the tribe ADDers would hunt ( because we excell at short term tasks) and the NORMS would do the day to day mondain tasks (because they can handle repetitive day to day tasks.)

If I had to rename ADHD I would name it

A.I.   for Attention Inconsistentcy. We don't have a deficet in attention we just don't apply it evenly.
adhd is a disorder as stated in its name
Who decides what is order any way? All disorder means is distant from order. . .  who’s order. . . .societies . . . . . who cares . . . .  they say all sorts of crap . . . . .  they thing beating around the bush is normal and political Bull Sh** is “social order” , Society  think being put on hold and being told by a recording every 30 seconds how important your call is “ordered” . . . .yea I distance myself from that as much as possible.

ADD is a contextual disorder.
Attention deficit disorder is totally the wrong name for our state of being
How right you are and I along with some help from some other ADD friends have found the perfectly  correct name for what we have it is  shorter toooo

B.A.= Boredom Aversion.
There.   I provoked. Oh goody. Now I feel better.

Absolutely love the cat and the hat lines . . . .

You are being funny  not obnoxious. . . . .
This us vs. them mentality is annoying. We're all people and we are all plotted on the spectrum of humanity. We all could use some improvement in one area or another. We all could use some kudos for the way we are already. This is not a battle.
I can respect this as your opinion but I must disagree ventamently. . . .  so here goes some venting . . . . .

Yea the “us” vs. them is annoying and has been for a long time now. Please bare in mind where this mentality came from and the reason for the reaction you are reading . . . .incase you weren’t reared on the same hyperactive planet I was here is an over view.

Us vs. them is a result of main stream “experts” began proclaiming those with ADD have a lower IQ (now worded to say score less on IQ test), come to find out when reading studies closely they were testing co-morbid students in special education to some from the gifted class. . . . or studies that unfairly sort out any one who resembles intelligent and has ADD symptoms as controls and using only the lower functioning to come to their conclusions about ADD.

When they (main stream science) tell us all that is wrong with out mentioning one possible right.

Us vs. them when we were placed in their disordered boxes because we said what we thought with out beating around the bush of BS. When we continued to type while some one else was talking because we could listen and type at the same time. . . .but were considered rude because they can’t do this.

Us vs. them began  when I had my ass beat for being hyperactive because THEY failed to understand to sit still physically hurt. . . .I hurt no matter what I did. . . . .but according to main stream I didn’t have “internal speech or inhibition control (which is crap) You say there is no battle then why was I scared for being different ? Isn’t that what battles produce scares from injuries inflicted because one is different “from another side” ?

So yea I am sick of it and have been sense I was six! When they quite expecting me to fit into their boxes . . . . . . . .when ADD children and adults are taught their strengths as well as their weakness . . . . .when the world become more  wiggle friendly (some people’s butts just weren’t designed for an hour in a chair) . . . . . . when they see how screwed up  society because of their BS rules of conformity that  they created . . . . .their emphasis on sitting for an eternity causes couch potatoes  . . . . . . . then the revolt will be over!

It isn’t like any one is suggesting we go out and beat non-ADD children for being different or any thing . . . . . it wasn’t right when I was hurt for being different and treating another with physical harshness  or mental abuse is not acceptable weather the person is with our with out (being or not being) ADD.

A few people being proud of who they are isn’t a bad thing. . . seeing the  blessing in our different biological design is a battle for many here. (including me)

Oh yea put me down as being ADHD . . . .  heavy on the “H” factor. I am hyperactive in body and mind  it is my way of being.

I totally understand now where you are coming from and I thank you for explaining your position to me. It makes sense. Attention deficit disorder is totally the wrong name for our state of being. I hope they change this title. It is inaccurate and insulting. I feel it is quite the reverse and that the non-ADDER's are actually suffering from this. worldisround39053.7494328704What would the world be like if ADDers ruled it ?
OK. The universe.

It would be. BEEN THERE....DONE THAT.
OK.Ruled may be the wrong word ?

Integrated ?
i consider myself to be ADD ---

it is the way i perceive the world - an 'addled' way.

and i know it can be a right pain in the butt - but i don't recognise it as a disorder either.  i would prefer to view it as a gift.  difficult to access but certainly a gift if only i could manage to access it!!!!
chjones39053.5990393519

when im talking about my son i say "he HAS adhd". i dont know what other people say

i will watch this post and find out

*AM*

... ADD is synonymous with mind ...

HAVE makes it sound like a disorder

:-)

... funnily enough I replied to this question a few years back.
Question posed by a then moderator on the ADD site - she was also from Scandinavia (Sweden).

If you ever come across the site (there're only a couple of other popular ADD sites out there in cyberspace) ... her posting and real name 'Gabriela.'

SB_UK39053.5465046296adhd is a disorder as stated in its name ... there's been a history of change in the name for adhd - a while back it was 'minimal brain dysfunction' ...

... the name is nothing more than that ...

... growing evidence suggests adhd is not a disorder but associates with a disorder ...

- here's an example - a tall man living in a world of short people.
A terribly sore head from hitting it on his friends' ceilings.

We're calling ADHD a disorder in much the same way that we'd say that the tall guy has a sore head - because his height is a disorder.

Rephrased - 'it sure looks like it - but it is - just as certainly - *not*'

I wonder how you explain ADD? I mean...do you say "I have ADD" or "I am ADD"?

Hello World.

yes.
that's really it.

... reality from P.K.Dick.

evolution away from the silliness of nonADD.

and ADDers ruling ->- governance by forum ->- kinda' like the first few fora out there ... way back in our history - before the Internet, computers, electricity and perhaps even Mr Potato Head.
