when did grownups become aware...? | ADHD Information

I have lived in the United States my whole life. I just found out that I have ADHD about 2 months ago. I'm 21 right now. Personally I thin it is overperscribed here. I know many people who at the most have very mild ADD and are diagnosed with ADHD, and I know many people who aren't diagnosed with ADHD but who have it.Hi again :)

When did grownups in the states become aware of that they also could be ADHD?

In Denmark its quite new ...about 2-3 years...

I was diagnosed as an adult nine years ago, and I know others who were diagnosed as adults a few years before I was. I think the US has been recognizing ADD in adults since probably the early 1990s. But I think back then it was not as common. The first doctor I saw diagnosed me with dsythymia (chronic, low level depression) which I also have, but missed the ADD. I ended up going to the Amen Clinic to be assessed for ADD, and they specialize in treating children/adults with ADD. I think more doctors are aware of it now so it is diagnosed much more readily than in the past, even without seeing a specialist.

There are so many people here in America who have ADD/ADHD, its hard to keep tally any more. It is apparent that the number of ADD/ADHD patients grows exponentially on a yearly basis. Based on what I've read in other threads, ADD/ADHD is equally prevelant among adults in ALL nations across the globe.

Countries, world-wide, need to start accepting ADD/ADHD as an actual illness (like AIDS) and work together to find a cure(s) for it. At Denmark has come to terms with the illness and will hopefully begin aiding other countries in finding a cure.
