5 yr old on Metadate CD..worried.. | ADHD Information

The medicine in Metadate is methylphenidate in a long acting form. It is the same active ingredient that is in ritalin, daytrana and concerta; just different delivery systems.

Everyone responds differently to the different meds (even the same med with a different delivery system). It may take time to get the right med/dose for your child so be patient.

My daughter is on concerta and guanfacine and has gone from a depressed, defiant, axious child making Ds and Fs to a happy, self-confident, loving child who is getting As and Bs in school. We use the meds, accomodations in school (which she does not seem to need most of now) and a positive reinforcement behavior modification plan (ograms marble system, which is the top thread of the parents section).

vickie39055.3434259259My 8 year old son started on Metadate CD 20 mg in September.  It lasts about 8 hrs for him. He has minimal side effects (mild rebound- more silly and distractible after dinner).  He is doing better in school (academically and socially), but is still somewhat impulsive.  If Metadate doesn't seem like the right medication for your child, just take him off it.  Another stim may work better or with fewer side effects; it's not an all or none kind of thing.  Good luck!  Thanks for your replies.  He came home today with postive remarks from his teacher ( the first in many weeks).  The teacher said he appeared sluggish in the begining morning but was active and partipating by late morning. I noticed his "silly/impulsive" mannerism came back about 4:30pm. Is this what to expect? I will keep you all posted on my Kindergartener on Stims!My 5 year old son just started on Metadate CD 10 mg and Im kinda scared for him to be taking this medication.  Is anyone (child or adult)taking this medication?  How are you doing?  Any crazy side effects.  Please share your story...to help me feel better informed. My daughter has been taking it for about 2 months.  Yes that is about what you can expect all though every child is different.  It has effected my daughter's appetite more than anything else. She has lost about 2 pounds since starting the medication.
