Different effect of drugs? | ADHD Information
I got my diagnosis just a few years ago in 2003 (i think), and before that when I was 18 (wich is the legal age for beer and wine) I tried alcohol for the first time (I tasted beer and wine before that but never enough to get drunk). Later I allso experimented a bit with "soft drugs" (e.g. Cannabis). The strange thing is that both I and my friends noticed that I have a stronger and sometimes different reaction to the substances.
When i drink I get "buzzed" by just a 3 beers, when I drink more I get "sedated" and then I fall asleep (usually long before midnight). When I smoked cannabis (I have no urge for cannabis or excessive drinking after I started taking ritalin) I got vivid hallucinations, and stronger effects than the others.
Or as a friend put it "When you drink, you seem like you've smoked cannabis or something; when you 'smoke' you seem like you're on LSD or something; and you're almost as 'crazy' when you're sober as we are when we drink."
Other substances like caffeine has little effect at all. Except for rapid heartbeat if i drink several litres of strong coffee, It hardly makes me awake, just one cup of coffee makes me more sleepy instead of awake.
Is this typical for ADD/ADHD'ers?
Another strange thing, by the way:
I used to smoke tobacco, now I use "snus" (scandinavian style "chewing tobacco" wich is not chewed but placed underneath the upper lip), but allthoug it IS addictive I actually manages to 'forget' to smoke or take a 'snus' the whole day when I'm doing something interesting.
(I know it's probably very typical for an ADD'er to never know when to stop writing, hehehe... )I have a higher tolerance to alcohol. I don't take drugs, but I have in the past when I was a kid.. and I had a higher tolerance to them as well. Weed just made me sleepy.. never did anything for me. I'm not dx'd yet, but I know I will be next month when I'm tested. I don't drink that often, and hope I don't lose the taste for it when on meds! I enjoy drinking from time to time.
I don't know if either is a result of having ADD, or just your body, weight and how you react to alcohol/drugs.
