My ds is 5 yrs old and in Kindergarden. We recently added an anti-depressant to aid with weight gain, but it makes him very tired. We have to give it at 6:30 p.m. so that he is awake enough for school at 9:00 a.m. the next morning.
My question is how much homework is too much for a Kindergardener? Tonight he had three items that came home that are due tommorow. After we had diner dad and I sat down at the table with him and did two of the three. By that time an hour had passed and his attention was no longer focused on the homework. The anti-depressant had started to kick in and he was tired!! We tried to start the third item but he was in no way interested in participating any longer. I thought about tackling the last item in the morning, but mornings are not good around here so the thought of adding fuel to the fire with homework is beyond me.
Is it approiate of me to ask the teacher for more time to complete tasks because of his ADHD?? Is over an hour of homework for kindergarden too much???
I'm at a loss here...Do I send in what we completed??? Do I keep everything until we are done??? Any suggestions would greatly help.
My daughter is in the first grade & her daily homework usually consists of 1-2 page of math, 1-2 language arts papers & 20 minutes of reading. She can usually finish is all (including the reading in about 1 hour. I don't remember her having over an hour of homework in kindergarten though, maybe more like 30 minutes. In kindergarten, we had little to no homework, more fun exercises, maybe 10 minutes every once in a while - like 6 times all year!!
In first grade it was maybe 2 times a month, for 15 minutes, reading every night for 1-5 grades in elementary school. Second grade 15 minutes - 30 minutes depending on my daughter, twice a week. Third grade was another story, but he had the homework queen, who gave out more than his current 4th grade teacher. She definetly prepared him, but I don't want my daughter to get her, she couldn't handle that type of teacher.
I live in Massachusetts with the MCAS testing and in a town that is in the top 10. Believe me, we get homework, especially reading, they really push that - every night starting in first grade. But not in kindergarten!
For a kindergartener, that is an awful lot!! I would talk with the teacher. I think your guy did GREAT doing all that after dinner especially having the medication wearing off!
Good Job to your little one!
And I think the teacher needs to realize that too!
I think homework for kindergarten is purely optional. DD(7) had homework every day, yet she didn't read at the end of kindergarten. DD(6) had ZERO homework in kindergarten and she is reading at the 2nd grade level already. Right now their homework takes about 5 minutes to do their sheets, and additional time to go over spelling words. I learned the hard way last year not to stress over homework so much.mumoftwo: That is definitely a lot of homework. I can also see that the larger load of homework goes for Friday.
. For us, the larger amount comes every Monday. It is so hard for my son since I enrolled him (before knowing he was adhd) in a bilingual school, and he really has a very hard time with English, so five words to learn are a real challenge. I am thinking about changing him to another school for his primary next year. The big issue I have is that he doesn't want to, he loves his school. But I can see myself every afternoon dealing with homework issues, that will become more demanding in English, and I really want to diminish my son's stress levels. He is too stubborn and says he doesn't care about having to deal with more English.

I don't know what to do. If he doesn't want to go to another school, should I push him? Well, time will give us an answer.
mariaven what is bilingual school?
mariaven thankyou
my son 12 is adhd he as spanish lessons twice a week in school athough he enjoys this lesson hes finding it really hard, he cant remember what hes learned in class id love to speak spanish. and i can understand that you want your son to speak english. spanish and english the most 2 spoken language in the world (i think). your not stupid for not speeking in english to your son, maybe get some nursary ryhme books or watch english tv if you dont get uk or usa tv channels mabee you could look online there is some great kids web pages from the bbc. playing games and singing songs might help aswell

Maybe speaking to him now in English would aid your son in his English lessons. I am thinking that if he really likes his school then that is half the battle! If he does not mind the challenge, maybe that is a good thing..though I know that would mean more work for you as well..If you switch him against his will, you may run into major defiance on top of everything else..
Perhaps after he gets the 'basics' down a little better, it will come easier...maybe a few 'booster' classes in English in the summer, and as others have mentioned, have him get online to some English speaking web sites to play around and learn without really knowing it!
My son is in his last level of preschool which is similar to first grade in the US. My son gets a lot of homework everyday, but as the school is very organized with this, we can always expect the amount of homework he has everyday. He usually gets a page to write letters, sentences, or math, plus a picture that is always on the opposite side of the page. Then he gets five spelling words per week that he must study for a test every Friday. He must also read a daily chapter in his reading book in Spanish, and another chapter in his English reading book which are usually evaluated every day. Yesterday we also had an extra, he had to make a shepherd out of newspaper for the nativity school contest. So yesterday it was tough, we had to finish all the usual stuff (that takes us about an hour and a half to two hours due to his adhd), then the shepherd, and then he also had to attend to his therapy for his adhd. Fortunately he was so excited with the shepherd thing, that he was very cooperative with homework.
In my case, my son has multiple activities through the week all intended to aid in his adhd issue. Sometimes, when we can't really get all the job done because of these, I usually send a note to his teacher and she completely understands and gives my ds more chance. If your teacher is well informed about your son adhd, she should be cooperative with these issues.
Good luck!!
every friday my 7y old comes home from school with loads of home work. he has a reading book, has to write 10 sentances, learn 15 new spellings, and a maths sheet with 20 different sum on it. i think its too much for him. we do the spellings first as there is a test every monday, the reading book takes all week, he starts to read to me but always gets distracted, even when he as read it we forget to take it back to school on mondays. the work sheets (sentances and maths) get done eventuly we usualy get them all finished and catch up every half term. i got a letter last week saying my son had only brought home work back twice since october, i know thats really bad on my part but it hard enough getting him to go to school to start with
It ss a school where they receive education in Spanish and English. My country is Spanish speaking. In his school they split the day in halves. A part is taught in Spanish and the other in English. Teachers speak in English all the time and all work assignments are in English. In comparison to the other kids, my son has more difficulty in English. I have to add that I speak English bcause I learned it in the US, but made the mistake of never speaking to my son in English. I guess it didn't come natural from me. But now I see how stupid I was.
Mariaven39058.2589814815Yes I think that is too much homework for K. Does your child have a IDEA or 504 plan? If not ask for one to be done and make sure they include a limit to homework and additional time to complete assignments.
It ss a school where they receive education in Spanish and English. My country is Spanish speaking.
We have schools like that here too, they call them dual medium, as we have 11 official languages in South Africa.Too much homework for Kindergarten, IMO. Have you tried talking to the teacher about reducing the load or getting a 504 plan, since his later day meds make homework difficult? She may be willing to let the work be done after a period of time, rather than the next day. That way, if one day has a lot of work and the next not much, it evens out a bit and is all due on, say, Friday.
