Yes. We just had the same thing occur. Becky has been on Metadate CD 10 mg since October. For the last 3 weeks I noticed that it didn't seem to be working. We went for a follow-up appt. yesterday and dr. upped the dose to 20 mg. She said it is very common for that to happen. She called it a "honeymoon" period.
Beckysmom39059.4300578704Yes, it is possible that the medication at that dosage has stopped working and he needs an increase. My son increased very quickly with his concerta when we first started. He was at the first dosage of 18mgs. and ended up in about 4 months at 72mgs. where he leveled off and still is two years later!!
You mention the growth spurt, which is wonderful since he is on medication. It seems that his body has adjusted, that is what my son's pediatrician said to him when he gained 10 pounds last year!!
I think your son needs an increase in his dosage due to growth, however, I would call the prescribing doctor and discuss this. My doctor had us call him after teachers reports, and we would up the dosage overnight!!
Regards!
This may sound silly but make sure he is really taking it and the pill doesn't end up at the bottom of the glass. If it stops working it really shouldn't be that suddenly. Also don't take it with citris drinks like orange juice.Hi everyone, my 5 year old ds started taking Focalin XR in October - we gradually upped the dosage to 10 mg and he has been doing wonderful on that. They even stopped using his behavioral chart because he was totally right on with everything that they expected from him.
On Tues, his 4K teacher sent home a note that he did not have a good day - extremely impulsive, like pre-med. I called her Wednesday after class and she said it was a little better, but that Tues it was "like it hurt to be in his body and he just wanted to get out". She said that it was like he knew he was doing things he shouldn't, but couldn't stop it (just like pre-meds).
Is it possible to grow out of the dosage that fast? He does seem to be going through a growth spurt right now, could that mess things up for a short period?
Updated to Add: Just got off the phone with the doctors office - she is upping him to 15 mg, and apparently it is not unusual for this to happen at first. If it isn't a high enough dose, then it will only work for so long. Wish us luck!! It makes sense I guess - when I spoke to the teacher today, some of the symptoms she related were very similar to when he first started meds and it wasnt strong enough.
dmid39058.635162037I don't know, dmid, but we're having the exact same problem with Adderal XR. It worked so great at first. His handwriting was unbelievably improved, and he was making up math problems just to do for fun! And they were really hard math problems! He was getting A's instead of F's and D's on his tests. Then suddenly it was like he wasn't taking anything at all. I tried increasing the dose, but that didn't do anything but make him tired. We go back to the doctor this afternoon.
