side effect of adderall xr | ADHD Information

Have you asked your son if his mouth feels really dry? For me, no matter what stimulant I have been on (Concerta, Ritalin, Focalin, Adderall) I have experienced a really dry mouth. If that is all it is, then chewing sugarless gum and drinking water often will help, but it may not go away. If he doesn't have a dry mouth then his doctor probably thinks it is a tic. I would definitely speak to the doctor about this. It is so hard to find the right med. and if you've found it, he should be able to explain why he wants your son off of it. no he just told me to stopped the medicine.  He never gave me a reason why. My girlfriend's son stopped Adderral because of facial tics which is the reason why the doc told them to stop right away...  Maybe this was his concern too?My son just started taking adderall xr 10 mg.  Since started this medicine he has constantly been licking his lips and moving his tongue is a circular motion.  This is the only problem that I am seeing with this medicine so far.  His doctor told me to stop the medicine but I dont see why since he is alot calmer and is able to focus all day long.  He has no drop off period with the medicine.  I was wondering if anybody else has this problem with adderall.  I cant seem to get any feedback from the medication forum so I thought I would try here. Did the doctor imply concerns that it might be some type of a facial tic?

i know that dry mouth is a side effect of the med and i read that it's important to drink lots of water while on it.  my daughter is on it, the only side effect we are dealing with sleep.  we just upped to 10 mg over the weekend and i'm pretty sure that i liked her better on 5mg.  she said that she's having stomach aches on 10, but that i first heard about today.  she's eating well.

good luck!

Adderall is an amphetamine, maintaining a high fluid intake is critical to avoid dehydration, especially if your body is not tolerant!

maxdad i agree with you about the previous post.  I would never try anything on my child that does not have clinical background that me as his mother cant do any research on it.

My son no longer takes Adderall

------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------

I just wanted to tell you my story about my ADHD son. I have a happy ending and thought it may help some other mothers and fathers.

When my son was 7 he was diagnosed with ADHD. He was put on Adderall which seemed to work very well in the beginning. I am not a medication person but I had tried several natural things that helped a little but not enough. The longer he took Adderall the more side effects he had. He got to where he didn't want to eat anything. He couldn't go to sleep at night. He didn't enjoy anything which I guess was the first signs of depression. He grew very little the 3 years he was on Adderall. His personality went from one extreme to the other. At school he looked super focused and at home when the medication wore off he had no focus at all.  His dosage went from 5mg to 15mg and was getting ready to go to 20mg when I got him off the medication.

Someone told me serotonin was supposed to help ADHD. I knew nothing about serotonin so I went on the internet and started researching it. I found a product called Neu-Becalmd that was supposed to help increase serotonin and help a lot of my son's symptoms. I tried it and my son has been off of his medication for over 5 years now. He no longer shows the signs of ADHD and he is doing great in school. Neu-Becalmd works different than medication. It actually restores the brain where medication alters it. Neu-Becalmd usually doesn't work as quick as medication but the longer you take it the more benefits you see. You can find Neu-Becalmd by simply adding .com to the name. I learned a lot by reading the information on the website. I hope this helps.

Folks

This is a blatant sales pitch for a product that has no evidence of efficacy for ADD ... none.

The website mentioned attempts to fool visitors with pages of scientific studies about a variety of chemical brain reactions. They intentionally find the most complicated studies so that the user doesn't understand what they are reading.

And worst of all, they provide no evidence of a credible clinical study demonstrating the effectiveness of their product. If the product actually does anything you think they would be eager to put it to the rigors of a clinical trial by a credible research University or Hospital.

Be warned. There are dozens of scam products like this out there. Don’t be fooled by their smoke and mirror sales pitches.

Maxdad39072.6390046296After I had taken Adderall XR for about a month and my doseage was increased, I developed the side effect of clenching my teeth.  Along with this, I would push my tongue against the back of my upper front teeth to the point that the muscles underneath my tongue would feel sore.  In addition,  my jaw would become stiff and sore as a result of these side effects.  Fortunately after a few weeks, the side effects disapppeared.Sounds like a potential facial tic. People still have some overblown
notions of how stimulants "create" tics in people. There is some limited
potential, but if your doctor is knowledgable enough then there is a
solution.

The first is to just give it some time. For most cases of a sudden tic
onset, the tics fade after their body has adjusted to the meds. I had a
shoulder/neck tic that has faded away after a few months (fortunately to
the rest of the world it just seemed like I constantly had a stiff neck).

The second is to decrease the dose. Or to spread it out a bit. The tics
can be caused by too rapid an onset of medication.   Combine XR 5mg
with SR mg to get the same dose at a slower rate of onset and see if that
helps.

Third is to switch medications. Try ritalin, concerta, or focalin to see
what happens. People won't necessarily have the same response to each
type of stimulant.

And finally, if all else fails then there is a good chance that your son was
going to develop motor tics anyway. There's a very high overlap between
Tourette's and less severe tics and ADHD. Stimulants can speed up the
development of inevitable tics in children, or it can just be a coincidental
co-development of tics at the same time meds are started (which isn't as
far-fetched as it sounds since generally one starts ADHD meds because
symptoms are starting to develop/become obvious. It's not usuall a
random time frame)
