New Member/Parent: Looking for Books"The Out of Sync Child" is one that is often recommended for Sensory Integration Disorder. If that ends up being the problem, there is also "The Out of Sync Child Has Fun" which will give you (fun) activities you can do at home to help with SID. Good luck! Greetings fellow parents, My boy is 4, almost 5, and the doctor believes he has ADHD and/or sensory integration disorder. I am going to have him in occupational therapy in 2007. There are tons of books on the subject, I have been surfing this boards some, but I thought I'd just come out and ask what some good starting books are. I already ordered Dr. Bob's Guide to Stop ADHD in 18 days, as well as Stopping ADHD by O'Dell and Cook from Amazon (I think there were some recomendations while searching these forums.) Any other suggestions anyone can share? I am overwhelmed with all the books. Thanks so much! Joey Hi and welcome, The Out of Synch Child is the best one I've read for sensory integration (my son also has this). It was recommend by our therapist, the OT, and the pediatrician. You might want to check out Healing ADD by Dr. Daniel Amen. He's done a lot of brain imaging on people with ADHD and his book explains how the brain is affected and in what areas, as well as recommended treatments. Very interesting stuff. Thanks, I was checking out that book through Amazon and B&N.com, and looking what others bought, and also saw: Raising a Sensory Smart Child: The Definitive Handbook for Helping Your Child with Sensory Integration Issues Any thoughts on this one? I may run to my local B&N today during lunch to see if they have any of these in stock. (They didn't have any of the Stop ADHD books.) Thanks, Joey I thought The Explosive Child by Ross Greene was extremely helpful. Great techniques for discipline for any kid, not just kids with ADHD.I think a good book to start with is Taking Charge of ADHD by Barkley. You can get them pretty cheap on Amazon second-hand, or your library probably has a copy. Here is a link: On the other books mentioned, you can get them second-hand much cheaper--you should look into it! We were told a daily sensory diet is best both 1 for school and 1 for home. Fidget toys while working. |
