Advice would be much appreciated | ADHD Information
Hello,
I am 18 years old and a senior in high school. When I was 16, I was diagnoised with innatentive ADD and I also having a learning disibility. I don't have a lot of friends, and the ones I do have are away at college. I don't have any good friends at school. I have tried my hardest to make friends at my school but nothing is working. I am very quiet and shy and only open up to those who I am most comfortable with. I have stopped taking medication because the side effects of it wearing off became to much for me to handle. Almost a year after going off the medication I still have feelings of sadness. It can come on at any time and for no particular reason. Even when this occurs I don't consider myself to be depressed. Since I want to keep up my grades for graduation I have decided to not get a job until the summer. My mom thinks that it would be a good idea to do some volunteer work to keep me busy and I agree with her. My only worry is that I will not be with people my own age, but with people I will have nothing in common with. Anyone else have a similar situation? Though I do talk to my friends on an almost daily basis, I am alone most of the time, since they do not live anywhere near my city. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Why not volunteer for something that is more likely to have younger people volunteering? Sure, if you volunteer in a soup kitchen it's more likely to be older people, but a lot of grassroots activism is younger people. Pick something of interest to you- environment, women's rights (I'm assuming you're female, but it's a good cause even if you're not), human rights, politics- then look for local groups. Many of the larger organizations that work for these things have small local groups that have regular meetings around the country.
I know how you feel though- I also am quiet and don't tend to talk to people I don't know. It can get lonely.
Yes, I am a female. Thanks for the advice!
