Strattera at the right dose can be a miracle pill, BUT half the people on it are on the wrong dosage. it is supposed to be dosed at 1.2-1.8 mgs per kilo, too low or too high can cause mood isues.
My dd took Strattera for 2 years with WONDERFUL results. We did stop it due to weight gain, but i would go back to it in a minute.
my son was on strattera and focalin xr. He has some anxiety issues and the medicine made the anxiety worse. so he was taken off of that and put on adderall xr and he has side effects from that. Now he is on imipramine and i see an improvement in him so far. Imipramine is a anti-depressant but it also used for anxiety, adhd and other things.Hi!
Just wondering - is there anyone out there taking straterra and having alot of luck with it? I feel like I always see negative posts about it and I know it is my dd14's next choice. She was on Wellbutrin for almost 5 years and it worked great, but started to lose effectiveness and we have gone as high as we can. Tried adderall and concerta - both gave her bad headaches, appetite issues, and cyring/moodiness. I have heard straterra is very similar to wellbutrin, so I am hoping she will tolerate it better, but havent seen too much positive feedback about it. She is primarily inattentive with some anxiety and depressive tendencies (psych docs verbage). Thanks for anyones experience with it!
Read about low seratonin it effects attention. I would treat this first you may see a difference then. WE USE 5HTP. Strattera made our son ill/more moody then before. ivanhoe39065.281400463Thanks Jade for your insight - i appreciate everyones input, but it was reassuring to see a post from someone who is dealing with the exact same meds. since i last wrote, the side effects from the concerta36 and backing off wellbutrin (got from 400mg down to 100 daily) were just getting to be too much for her and her mood was definitely suffering. her dr.s determined that she does indeed need the wellbutrin for her mood, impulsiveness and other symptoms, it just doesnt do the trick for concentration. So I think the outcome is that we are slowly adding the wellbutrin back (presently 100 am and pm) and working up very slowly until we see the benefit again - so far, this amount seems to be doing just that - I am thrilled - its half the amount she had worked up to over the years. Then we will add a small dose of something else to aid concentration. I am thinking they may do straterra or focalin. Personally, I would rather see the straterra - she hates the stimulants she tried (adderall and concerta). But we will cross that bridge when we come to it. I am just so thankful to see her happy and at ease again. Thanks again for taking the time to give me your thoughts and experience - I really appreciate it!!Hi Irishrosie-
I'm on both Wellbutrin and Strattera right now. I'm on a low dose right now (25mg) that my dr. is slowly increasing because the Wellburtin can cause it to build up in your system, so the thinking is that I'll see effects before getting up to whatever the normal dosage would be. I've only been on it for a little over a month, but I am seeing so good effects (I'm less overwhelmed by the clutter and I can actually figure out where to start when I have a project).
I don't have anything bad to say about the drug, only that it takes a while to start to work. I had minimal side effects the first couple of days, just dry mouth and a little dizziness. Actually it reminded me of being stoned. But that only lasted a day.
I noticed a lot of negative posts about it when I did a search on here back when my doc first gave it to me, but then I realized that almost all of them were by the same one or two people. What's that saying. . . If it's something good, then they'll tell one or two people, if it's bad, they'll tell twenty.
I have heard that focalin sometimes has less side effects...have you tried that? Also sometimes augmenting with Tenex when a stimulant is given helps with some of those side effects like appetite issues, sleep, and anxiety, moodiness, etc. You might want to talk to your doctor about possibly a low dose of stimulant augmented with the Tenex.
Shire is even awaiting approval for a long lasting form of the tenex as a first line drug for ADHD. The only thing that the tenex (generic guanfacine) does not do well with is the focusing...that is why a low dose of the stim is needed I believe.
Good luck!
