Residential Treatment Centers | ADHD Information

A therapist recommended a long term residential treatment center for my daughter who has ADHD, Bi-Polar, ODD and Mood Disorder.  Has anyone had their children in one of these and was it helpful at all?

Was this a private therapist or a school therapist? It was a therapist that was working with her when she was in the last hospital she stayed in.

My stepsister was in one for a while when she was in her teens.  She was ultimately dx'ed as Bi-Polar, but at the time she'd had multiple incorrect dx.  She said later that it saved her life (she'd already gone through 2 suicide attempts, although she's had a couple more since).  It was a last resort for my parents- the family was in constant crisis mode and after her second, nearly successful suicide attempt they felt that there was no other way they could keep her safe and get her the help she needed.

Do you have her in ongoing therapy? And if so, what does he/she advise?  I would look at a day treatment program first, especially if she is younger.  Being away from you could be very scary and could cause her to feel as though she's being abandoned, even though you're getting her help.

Wow, that sounds really serious.  I've read about these on another forum.  Here's the link.  Lots of parents there have experience with this.
