Comparison of med costs | ADHD Information

I believe that the only ADHD meds that are on the list are guanfacine (tenex) and clonidine..there are many antibiotics, heart meds, that kind of thing..here is the list...

Wal-mart has a program that charges no more than 4.00 for generic meds.  I know there is a generic for Adderall ( short acting), and ritalin. Not sure if the long acting formulas have a generic equal. All of the meds my son has taken have been covered...the most expensive co-pay was for strattera ( 25.00).  I think this med is pretty expensive if you don't have coverage.

You should be able to check the formulary for your insurance plan. Plans are pretty individual on what they cover and how much. Are you trying to decide what options you should discuss with the doctor?

Ritalin and Tenex are older and both have generics (methylphenidate and guanfacine) and the generics at lease will most likely be covered by most insurance companies at the lowest copay, or even be inexpensive without insurance.

Although a doctor can prescribe any med, meds that are FDA approved for adults are more likely to be covered by insurance companies for adults, but again it depends on the company. You would have to look up the individual package inserts (prescribing information) for the meds to see if adults are listed for dosing. I know that Strattera, Adderall and guanfacine (for blood pressure) are approved for adults. Others, I have not looked up...

Which of these medications are usually covered by health insurance and which are not (for an adult with ADD)?  I keep reading about the high cost of medications and wondered how they compare.

What was your experience with insurance and these meds?
