Adderall Side Effects | ADHD Information

Share
I'm glad I found this forum, and I'm hoping someone can answer my question.   I'm a bit alarmed, at this point.

My now 15-year-old daughter was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 7.  She took Ritalin for nearly a year, at which point, I stopped giving it to her, due to her extreme thinness and the personality changes (she was basically lethargic - not at all the bubbly, wonderful little girl she had been previously).

This year, as a sophomore who had already lost two credits and ended her freshman year 2nd to the last in her class, she begged me to have her re-evaluated for ADHD.  Finally and reluctantly, I did.  I could not stand to see her so miserable with herself, her grades and school in general.

After several lengthy sessions/tests with both a psychologist and a psychiatrist, Adderall XR was prescribed.  They started very low (mostly due to my extreme aversion to stimulants and fear of the possible physical effects) - 5 mg.  Eventually, she was worked up to 20mg (about two weeks ago).

For the past few weeks, my daughter has been having increasing problems with extreme nausea and vomiting.  Twice this week she has come home from school vomiting.  This seems to last anywhere between 6 and 12 hours, at which point she recovers.  It does not happen on the weekends (she does not take the medication on the weekends), but the frequency is increasing.

I can think of nothing else that might be causing this aside from the Adderall, and I am wondering if anyone else has had this experience with the drug?  I am going to call her physician tomorrow, but I am trying to find some answers before then.

As an aside, she is doing very well in school, but I attribute it as much to her newfound interest and positive attitude as anything else.

Thanks for any help in advance!
She definately needs to return to her doctor and explain these severe side affects.  Meds are to give us a better easier life, not one full of sickness.  Keep in mind, they are meant to help us.If she is getting sick then it is either too strong or not the right medication for your daughter. Not sure if you are still having problems or not but I have had the same problem with my son in the past

Hi, my son ids 8 and I have known since bith(10) months old that there was something wrong.  My family members didn't want to admit there was a problem.  He has alway had an anger issue and can be very distructive during these fits.  I wound up being in the mental health hospital with the diagnose of Bipolar.  not sure if is is BP or ADHD.  Now, my family believes me.  He ad a break down shortly after I got out of the hospital.  Made an appointment with my PHY.  He put him on Adderall xr 10 mg  now 20 mg and streterra  28mg at night.

In the evening he is just unbereable.  It is like he is a different person.  Irretible, angry, impaticent, argumentive, emotional.  I see my DR. today.  This just doent seem right.  He has even gone af far to say he wishes he were dead!  That everyone in the family leaves him out.  He really feels this way!  I am very concerned and worried with all of the side effects this stuff causes.

I am on adderall xr as well and I understand the sideeffects he is going threw!!

These are not really side effects, what you & your son are experiencing is called the rebound effect that people who se bodies cannot handle the stim compound have when taking Adderall.  May I suggest you go to your Dr & ask about Strattera.  It has worked wonders with my son.  He can now have playdates, which he couldn't when on the Adderall.  Good luck.

My son is taking 28 mg of sterra at night.  That is when he seems to be the worst.  He takes the adderall xr in the am and his teacher sayes she has no problem with him.  Yet around 5 to 7 pm somethime is is just terrible!  So, Im not sure which one it is.  I tried taking him iff strettera and he was impossible.  Yet, somethimes even on the stretarra he is still impossible.  Just ant night.I am having the same problem he is great all day long but come 6 at night this whole sympathy I feel bad for myself, the yelling, screaming, fighting all sets in.I was also wondering if it was the adderal. He takes 20- mil of Adderal xr and 10 mils of Adderal regular release and Clonidine at night....

Clonidine is used for anxiety and it also helps him sleep. .I am meeting with his doctor in a few minutes..will let you know what she says..

Have a good one..

I spoke with my PHY lastnight, with waht I explained to him, he said that he is goinig threw a form of physcotic phase.  It is the depression kicking in and it manifests it self in a physcotic phase.  He put him on Resperdal .25 mg which is a antipsycotic.  Lastnight was his first time being in it.  NO FIT>  He slept very hard and had no nightmares like usual.  It was hard to wake him up so we will try an earlier bed time.  I believen in MY Phy.  He is a very smart and kind man.  So, I will continue as directed..  10mg of adderall xr in the am w/ food and streaerra 28 mg at 330. w/ food.  And Resperdal.25mg w/food at about 6:30.  It lessens the side effects if you take with food.  Make sure you contact your dr and tell min about what is going on with your son.  It is very real, he is really thinking and feeling this way.  And, he does not understand why!  How scarry for them....  Hope all goes well!
