Just started Adderal XR | ADHD Information

I am new to the group but not to ADHA.  My DD is 8 years old and started taking medication halfway through her first year of school.  They were issues in preschool but nothing severe enough to cause concern.

She takes 20 mg of Adderall XR.  We started at 5mg and went to 10mg after a couple of weeks.  We did 10 mg for about a year and then to 15 mg and now this fall to 20 mg.  With 15 mg she was a weeping, emotional mess.

Don't panic yet.  Increase the medication for a couple of weeks and see what happens.  For us it seems when the medicine causes problems the dosage is not strong enough.

If there is a problem and I am sure this is, don't give up.  Try another medication.  When you find the right one.  Your lives will change for the best, I promise.
Hi everyone -

I have a son who is 4 1/2. We just started him on adderal XR, 10mg.

First dose was Saturday. Yesterday was horrendous. Crying all day, super senstive, extreme mood changes, almost no sleep last night.

I say it's just his body adjusting to the meds, but DH hates it and wants him off now.

Gave him second dose this morning, same thing. He can go from happy and bouncing around to extreme crying fits over nothing.

I am going to call his doc tomorrow, but is an adjustment period normal? If so, how long can we expect it to last?

I know this drug may not be for him, so if it isn't working, I want to take him off of it right away.

Thanks for your input, I am having a really hard time with this!

my dd who is 9 was started out at 5 mg...we did that for 2 weeks...and then upped to 10.  i only did 10 for 2 days and then bumped her down to 7.5 on my own.  she was wired and hyperfocused on 10...WHEW!  she is now on the lowest does possible of ritalin and she's sleeping and not having stomach aches.

every situation/child is different...good luck!  i can so relate...but the dosage might be too high to start out with...just my 2 cents.
