Update: Revised IDEA laws for AD/HD | ADHD Information
Revised IDEA law could level playing field for children with ADHD
Beginning in 2003, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was up for reauthorization, a process required by law once every five years.
IDEA was devised to provide federal financial assistance to the state and local agencies that work with special education so that children with disabilities, including ADHD, are educated to the greatest extent possible along with other children. Students with learning disabilities who qualify for services under IDEA require an individual and specialized educational program so that they may progress adequately in school.
As part of the congressional reauthorization process, the House of Representatives first reviewed and amended IDEA back in March of 2003. Then, in May of 2004, the United States Senate reviewed and drafted its own reauthorization bill. Both legislative bodies proposed different, but substantial changes, therefore both bills are currently under review by a conference committee. Under committee review, both bills will be examined, debated and ultimately blended into a final bill upon which the House and Senate must agree.
