Need some help | ADHD Information

Share

My 5 year old was just diagnosed with ADHD, I'm having a really hard time trying to determine if he should be put on meds or not, or if there are other alternatives that do work and that have been proven.  I hear so many bad things about the meds it scares me to put my son on them.

If anyone has any suggestions please help.

Hi Krista

I am in exactly the same situation with my daughter and I have been
asking the same questions...a lot of people have been suggesting
homeopathy to me which I am now looking into.

Please keep us updated about your decision and how it goes with your
5yr old.

Best of luck
Nina

I know how you feel. We have been battleing the same question. My son is 6 and the school is having such a hard time with him.  He is so impussive it does seem like he can't control it.  We are waiting till after the holidays and then we will put him thought a physcial to make sure he is healthy and there are no underlineing medical problems.  If all goes well we will be putting him on the lowest dose of meds.  If he improves with the social stories and other resourses the school has started then we will wait on the meds.  Its a decision that is really hard to make but it is only one you can make.  I would do tons of research and make sure your child gets a full physical, including EKG (heart tests).

Keep us updated on your progress! Good luck!

Hello and welcome to the boards!  You will find a wealth of knowlegde and opinions here and this can help you with your decisions.  I myself love just reading the boards, even when life with my son is okay.  There is an alternative board that you can visit and read or ask any question.  I believe most of the parents on there stay away from medications with great results!

Good luck

If and when my 8yo son is diagnosed (we have an appt with the ped on 21 Dec) we will consult with a homeopath first.  I'm really not happy about medicating him right now as I feel there are other options to be explored first.  I too read the boards and find them very interesting. It seems like rebound from medication is a bit offputting, and I'm thinking if it's possible my boy is going to have this anyway I should try other options first.  It's a very personal thing though and I'm just saying what we're going to do, not telling anyone else what to do.Just a personal testament here that we have successfully been able to avoid meds.  It's not a quick fix and takes a lot of research on your part as parent, but it has been totally worth it for us.  We work with a Naturopathic Doctor and use a combo of diet modifications and supplements.  There's more info on the Alternative and Complimentary Meds section of this board.  Good luck with your decision.
