Reaction to Daytrana | ADHD Information
My 10 yr old son (sorry, I'm not into 'ds' code), had been on Concerta 18,
Strattera 40, but because of loud snorting noises (tics) and rebound
issues, the doctor decided to try him on Daytrana 10 mg. He took it for
about 3 weeks, there was less rebound in the evening (although some
strange behavior if we left it on past 4;30 PM), but the mornings were
horrific. After the first day or two, the patch took 2-3 hours to kick in. I
had to leave for work around 6:30 and my wife was left to cope with far
more than hyperactivity and impulsivity. He acted bizarre and I'll leave it
at that. With an 11 mo old, and two 13 yr olds in the house, you can
guess the havoc. I tried putting the patch on at 5 AM or even earlier, but
the results were not much different. After a few days of this chaos, I
called the dr back and she suggested going to 15 mg of Daytrana. That
softened the morning crazinessslightly, however on the 2nd day, he
started complaining of 'burning in the chest area.' Called the dr back and
she suggested going back to 10 mg or back to the Concerta after a day
off all meds. Tried going back to 10 mg but he had a similar reacton.
Daytrana is 'history' as this reaction is serious. He's back on Concerta 18
and the carousel moves on. Reading hundreds of these posts from
parents and drs who have tried everything under the sun, it makes me
feel like we're all desperately looking for the magic bullet while our
children continue to suffer. We;ve tried every form of behavior mod
(marbles, etc.) to no avail, homeopathic, holistic, you name it. A hundred
years from now this will be seen as the Dark Ages of ADHD treatment, but
we're just trying to help our children and survive.
I made up a bedtime story for my son last night, about a 10 yr old boy
who has ADHD and who asked Santa for a special present -- to be
normal, like every one of his friends. Santa wrote back and left the
following under his pillow on XMAS morning:
Dearest ____, Rudolph wanted to be like everyone else too. Where would
we be without him! What makes you so sad is also what makes you so
special. Your kind heart and love of life will always lead the way for
others. Thank you for being who you are. I will always be watching out for
you. Love, Santa
