3 year old girl | ADHD Information
Hello,
I have a 3 yr old daughter that is a constant motor mouth (even as I type this she's in my ear and face yapping!). She is a SWEET, SWEET adorable child, but... I feel she drains me out. I've noticed she can't follow through on simple directions such as, sit down, put your toys away, pick that up etc. She knows how to do all these things but she gets distracted on the way to doing them. I have to tell her EVERYTHING 10 TIMES! (I'm not exagerating!) I don't know if this is normal 3 yr old behavior like all my friends and family tell me, yet they never want to babysit her!! Her daycare lady has made comments about her anxiety over things. I wouldn't call her a hyper child, I would just say she is a busy body that can't pay attention, listen or sit still. She had 2 friends over, one was her age (3) and the other just turned 4, they all wanted to watch Finding Nemo in the DVD player, well my daughter couldn't stop standing up and bothering her friends, one of the girls stared at her and said firmly, "Sit down!! I can't see!!!" Her two little friends were so frustrated. When I go to the mall I have to put her in a stroller because she can't hold my hand and walk, she will run and bolt all over the place.
I need to know if this is similar to ADHD, I have ADD (No hyperness, although I am a motor mouth too). I've tried to bring this up to her pediatrician and she was so condescending and said it's all down to parenting skills, I need to praise my daughter more etc!! I watch Nanny 911, I take a lot of notes, it's a great show, and I DO praise my daughter when needed, I have a drawer full of stickers she excitedly works for, but that hasn't been changing the other behavior.
Advice Please!
Thanks.
Sandra
P.S I have FOCUS from Natures Remedies, she's been on it for a week, I don't know how long it takes but I haven't noticed anything.
Three yr.olds are very challenging. I work with kids ages 0-5 and would tell anyone that three is the worst year for behavior in most children- that terrible two's thing is really misleading. That being said, there is always the possiblility that she has ADHD. Three is a bit young to dx though, except in extreme cases.
What really helped us when our son was this age was play therapy and the book 123 Magic. They got us through till he was old enough to be properly dx'ed.
I think the focus takes at least a few weeks to work, if it does...all of the natural methods do..
Have you read ogram's marble thread at the top of this forum?? It is a great idea for implementing a positive reinforcement method of discipline with a child..it is quite long, but read through some of it and if you have questions, ogram will be happy to help.just send her a Private message(PM)..or ask the question on the thread.
I think that with a child that young, I would start with 1 or 2 behaviors that you want to work on first, then once you see improvement in those, add 1 or 2 at a time. Keep in mind that any new discipline system takes at least 2-3 weeks....I, too, watch and love Nanny 911, and Supernanny, but I am amazed when there is results in only one week..you may see immediate results, but I think for permanent results, it will take some time. Also, for a child that young, you may want to use tickets (you can buy rolls of them in the party aisle, or perhaps at a party store, or make your own out of construction paper), marbles may be a choking hazard. My daughter took pictures of the children doing what she wanted (or didn't want) them doing, then posted how many tickets earned or lost under the picture so her non readers knew exactly what was expected of them.
Hope this helps!
Thankyou two ladies for replying!! I'm a single mom on a budget, so I don't know if I can afford any therapy for her unless her insurance covers it, but I will look into the 123 Magic (THANKS!!).
chasesmom79- I don't know who ogram is (I just joined) but I will do a search. I am so thankful to have found this site, I feel like with time and more posts I will be better off than where I am now.
THANKYOU!!
Look at the top of this forum at the topics list...the top one explains this discipline method..
ogram is the administrator of the message board.
If you need to send her a private message , just go into the private message (top of the page) and put ~ogram~ into the "to" space....
Here is the link for the marble system thread...

When I first heard the diagnosis where i went for information free was the intronet and public Libraries. As for therapy our psychologist is a pop with insurance so he does a lot of phone consult for us but we do go every 3 months.
