HALLELUJAH!!!!!
Finally after alot of runaround our pediatrician prescribed Derrick Jr. focalin XR 5mg. There is enough time left over winter break to get him regulated (I hope). Start saying some prayers for all of us (as everyone in the house is affected).
for one the teacher should not be taking so long with the connor test , plus my sons school evaluted him with in 1 month where he qualified for prep class where they work one on one in smaller classes . maybe you need to go talk to the special education in your school district or board of education. but with your child hitting his self and wishing he was dead . sounds more like bipolar disorder. do some research on this disorder. but a child can have a combined adhd and bipolar . good luck and don't give up . you can get help just keep pushing for the sake of your son don't let him fall through the cracks of the education system
It is not the teacher holding the paperwork it is the pediatrician. Thank you for the reply, it is quite possible that he also suffers from another type of mental illness (maybe a co-morbid disorder along with the dominate adhd) because I have battled depression since I was a teenager, I too have a hard time concentrating (daydreamer) and have always been extremely forgetful.
my son is 4 and the school evaluated him. and is doing great for them so far. the school system did the tests themselves even though a peditrician already had done the connor system. it seems like my school district works with all kids as young as 3. good luckwell I found my way to this board mostly out of frustration (with my pediatrician not the kids).
I have a 14 yr old son who was diagnosed with adhd @ 12 after a lifetime of hearing he did not perform to his potential. As a young child he was treated for anxiety (he could not sleep at night due to graphic nightmares so they gave me a sedative to help him into a deep sleep), at that time I questioned the psychotherapist about adhd and he would not hear of it because my son was an Honor Student. I always knew there was something different going on (even in the womb when he would move for hours) and am thankful we were finally able to get something done, he takes focalin XR for the adhd and depakote for his epilepsy. Yes, even though he is medicated I still have to stay on him (and I gladly accept that responsibility) but he is doing so much better.
My frustration is not about him but about my 5 year old son. Even though he has not been clinically diagnosed yet I am 100% sure he has adhd as well. his symptoms are so much worse than my older sons that I am also beginning to wonder if there is not something else wrong also. He talks constantly , he says and does some of the strangest things and he will fly into a rage at the drop of a hat. His new thing is he has started hitting himself when he gets upset. He is almost unbearable to be around and I am quite sure his teacher feels the same way. I can not get the school system to do anything because he is under 6 years old but there have been instances where he says he wishes he were dead. His pediatrician has had the connor rating scale papers for over a month and has yet to even glance at them (parent and teacher). UGH!!!!
I was so busy venting I 4got 2 ask any questions. Does anybody know anything about normal or abnormal Connor Rating Scale scores?for one the teacher should not be taking so long with the connor test , plus my sons school evaluted him with in 1 month where he qualified for prep class where they work one on one in smaller classes . maybe you need to go talk to the special education in your school district or board of education. but with your child hitting his self and wishing he was dead . sounds more like bipolar disorder. do some research on this disorder. but a child can have a combined adhd and bipolar . good luck and don't give up . you can get help just keep pushing for the sake of your son don't let him fall through the cracks of the education systemI would also recommend bypassing your pediatrician and going to see a child psychiatrist.
I would also consider getting a new pediatrician anyway, not addressing your concerns for such a long period of time is unacceptable.
try taking him to a neuropsychologist. They will do an mri, tova test, eeg and other tests to find exactly what is going on and get the proper treatment for him as quickly as possible.Welcome sancowens...I recommend that you get a private evaluation by a child psychiatrist because if there are co-morbid issues, you need to have your child evaluated by a specialist who is qualified to make a differential diagnosis. The board of education is not qualified to make a differential diagnosis and for whatever reason your child is acting out, an accurate diagnosis is crucial because the earlier the intervention, the better the outcome. Once you have an accurate diagnosis you can always have the school test your child in order to get accommodations but make sure that whoever is diagnosing your child is qualified to do so. There are so many childhood disorders whereas symptoms overlap so no one except a specialist who is trained in the field of diagnosing and treating childhood disorders is qualified to make an accurate assessment. A child psychiatrist is able to make the distinction and that's the difference in terms of those qualified and those that think they know based on a set of symptoms, symptoms which very often can be indicative of something else or something more going on.
