my 5 year old daughter was diagnosed with severe ADHD. however she's gifted. the doctor said that he'd have to rate her intelligence on that of  a 12 year old. i'm working on getting her into a private school that will cater more to her needs.  i got her tested 2 weeks b4 christmas break so I could monitor her on the meds over her vacation. I was prescribed adderall xr 5 mg. she's been on this since last friday and i'm wondering how long it takes the medicine to regulate in her body so I can see good results.  It's made her  very moody and is crying/whining about everything, but she is sitting down to watch almost a whole tv program. now at night it's a different story and she doesn't want to go to sleep at all. it's like she's wired..   what should i expect?my 4 year son was put on adderall xr 5 mg and did pretty good but was moody and would cry over things that he had'nt before. after 2 weeks he just got where he didn't get along with anybody so the ped. uped his med to 10 mg did pretty good for another 2 or 3 weeks then just went downhill from there. preschool called saying my son was just sitting there hollering , pitching a fit over not wanting his shoe on. and no matter what they couldn't do nothing with him. so called ped. and she stopped the meds immediately. my son is not on meds now. he qualified for prep a class for behavior where they work one on one with him and on his weakness. doing good so far. but at night on adderall he slept very restless and i could hear his little heart beating .  i didn't like adderall at all but some people may do good on it but i feel like its not for my son when there are other meds.

Call the  dr who prescribed the adderall and tell him what is happening. For some strange reason a child can do very poorly on one med but do fantastic on another even though they are different formulations of the same basic drug. Maybe he can try another. Most people find the right med for them by trial and error.

Don't give up!
