hissmom.... I hope things have settled out for your daughter with regards to the crying. I think it very well could be from the Ritalin, as I believe most stimlulants list as a possible side effect "emotional lability". I'd never heard of that term before I started taking Adderall for my add. But boy, I did experience "emotional lability" and found my self crying "at the drop of a hat" over rather insignificant things... and I'm 50 years old!
If your daughter is still easily upset and cries, do the episodes last long, or does she come out of it almost as quickly as she started (that's how it worked with me).
hissmom,
Is the crying happening while the med is in her system or when the med should be wearing off? Discuss this with the doctor and how to either adjust this med or move to a different med. Ritalin is a short acting med and can be kind of harsh on some people. It may be that a low dose, long acting med might be milder as it builds in the system and them leaves the system. Are you seeing any positive effects?
Unfortunately, it can take time to find the right med and dosing schedule for the needs of the individual.
Wishing you and your daughter luck with this journey.
vickie39083.6825925926my 9 year old dd is on 2.5 mg bid and we are experiencing the crying etc. it is happening when the med should be in her system, as well as when it should be dropping. we are meeting with the pediatrician tomorrow to dicuss the past few weeks.

Crying and weepiness are frequently symptoms of too high a dose. [QUOTE=hissmom]Since my 6 year old starter Ritalin she cries at the drop of a hat. Could the Ritalin be the cause? She has been on 5mg once a day for the last 5 days. I don't know if I should stop it or not. We were hoping to get the right dosage before she went back to school on Tuesday.
As jla2 already mentioned, this can happen if the dose is too high and even sometimes if its too low. This is not uncommon. My son experienced this while going through a trial of meds. Check with your child's doc as perhap your child's dose needs to be adjusted. Sometimes it takes a while before the right med or target dose is achieved.
Thanks for all your advice. The crying seems to be getting better. She actually does it mostly when the meds are completly out of her system. There has been such an enormous improvement in her at school and at home that I would hate to have to stop it. I can tell she feels so much better about herself and she is so much happier. She used to be miserable and bitter all the time.
Thanks!

Any one else have this problem?
