Anti-Depressants that can be sprinkled | ADHD Information

My DS (age 7) was prescribed Zoloft in the concentrated liquid form and is refusing to take it and spitting it out.  It does have a high medicinal flavor even mixed with Sprite (as required).  Does anyone know of an anti-depressant that is in a capsule (like Adderall) and can be sprinkled in food?  He is willing to take Adderall mixed with ice cream.

This has been prescribed to counteract his irritable, sullen behavior that may or may not be a reaction to the many stimulants we have tried for ADHD.  Unfortunately, a defiant child is not one to take changes in medications well....as I am sure many of you have experienced.

Thanks for any input.

We haven't tried swallowing a pill in about a year.  The defiant side of this child is REALLY rough in the mornings and he is resistant to any changes.  I think I will work with him this weekend to see what I can get him to do.  Maybe a bowl of ice cream after a successful swallow would work?

I am not sure anti-depressants will be the wonder drug for us or not.  I question whether he may be borderline Bipolar.  He doesn't meet all the criteria but defiantly hit many of the pediatric signs.  So hard to tell with ADHD and ODD in the mix.  If I can get him to swallow, at least we could try...

Have you tried to get him to swallow a pill recently?  Sometimes it takes more effort at first, but he should eventually get the hang of it.  I discovered my son could swallow pills cause he was doing it with tictacs just to be goofy.

If I'm remembering correctly the Zoloft capsules are pretty small.  I've never run across any that could be sprinkled, as most of them are extended release, so you can't mess with the pill or it doesn't work right.  Also keep in mind that it's more important to have the correct medication than the easiest.

Is it possible to use an antidepressant that can be ground up in a pill grinder (as opposed to sprinkled)?

I do not swallow pills of any kind because my esophagus is as big around as a pencil at its narrowest point, and I've had to get around that restriction by either crushing up any pills I take or taking chewable or liquid (usually childrens' strength, unfortunately) forms of medication.  Just make sure they're the immediate-release kind, not any kind of delayed-release; otherwise, they won't work as expected and could maybe even be dangerous.

Anyway, that's what I do with the Wellbutrin SR and Adderall (immediate release kind) I take everyday, and it works for me.  I put the Wellbutrin in some yogurt, and the Adderall in a drink of some kind.  Right now the generic version of Adderall I have has a sickly-sweet taste, so I have to dump it in some strong-tasting drink like Cherry Coke, but a different generic version I took before didn't have any flavor and I could drink it with water.  The Wellbutrin, though, definitely has an unpleasant taste, but that's what the yogurt is for.  It hides the taste almost perfectly if I grind the pill up finely enough.

I hope you end up finding something that works.  Do you know why your son is resistant to swallowing pills?  I just ask because of, well, personal experience with refusing to take pills because I knew I would choke.
