Concerned about medication | ADHD Information

Lately I have been concerned about my son's medication (Strattera) because I see that it is not working. So, I am now under great stress due to the fact that I want to stop it and go for another opinion and a different med. This morning  I called school and spoke to the psychologist (who had shown a lot of support before) and explained more or less the whole story, I also told her that I would appreciate if they could supervise my son during this week and give me their part on Friday.

HER ANSWER: She said that they didn't have any problem in supervising him and giving me some feedback. BUT, she told me that if she was I, SHE WOULDN'T BE TOO CONCERNED ON THE MEDICATION PART. Instead, she would look for another school option for next school year because of the hard demands of my ds current school. I JUST HATED HER ANSWER. Come on!!! If I am medicating my ds, it is  because I am trying him to have success where he is; I don't think that enrolling him in another school would be better, I would be literally telling him: "Ok baby, don't make an effort, you have adhd, so you just can't cope with your school " THIS IS OUT OF THE QUESTION.  She also added that she had a relative who was on Strattera and was having great success. The poor woman (a psychologist) is lacking so much information...

I just wanted to vent, Thanks.

Has no one told her that different meds have different levels of success in different children/people????

EVERYONE knows that if they have any knowledge at all about ADHD meds....

Well!!

I guess that this says it all about her. I am not calling her again. I can see it is useless.

Psychologists are not trained in pharmacology like psychiatrists are. They do not have the background, and many do not have the desire to involve themselves in this aspect of treatment. They look to other interventions first. They also do not always have a clue on the needs of special kids.

The psychologist that my daughter saw for a while, went into the field because she saw no benefit to medication of psychiatric disorders (50 years ago). She has since seen the progress in the field and referred my daughter to a psychiatrist because she felt my daughter would benefit from medication (and because she could not rule out bipolar).

What's funny is that the school psychologist is completely oblivious to the fact that she looks blatantly ignorant on the topic of ADHD meds to anyone with very basic knowledge. She actually thinks she knows what she's talking about! In her position, she should know better. This would bring her credibility into question in my mind. I also thought it was kind of amusing that she would use it as an opportunity to suggest another placement. I would interpret that as her having given up on your son, and I would consider her completely useless in the future in terms of doing what is best for your son. Definately don't knock on her door again!! NoTellin39091.4159606481Wow, sounds like the psychologist likes to play mind games....Hopefully, you can find the right med combo that will work.  Good luck and don't give up!  Don't let ignorant people get you down!Fortunately this lady works only for preschool. So, next year, when my son goes to primary school AND IN THE SAME SCHOOL, I won't have to see her. The other good part is that all boys go to a different building for primary school in a nearby area. I won't damage my son self esteem, besides, he loves his school and despite his adhd, I know that he is going to be great as many of the stories I have read here.
