Computer/Video Games | ADHD Information

Shawn, I agree that anything timed would defeat the purpose of relaxation. I don't play any games that I feel rushed, unless I'm looking for an excitement fix. I stick to more indepth games that take strategy or creative thinking.

World, I too like RPG's. I enjoy being able to lose myself in a world other than the real one (kind of like why I go to miovies.) I enjoy playing at my own pace and enjoying just being there more than the end reward.

In the past I have had problems with moderating my time with computer games, but I have really worked at it.

Video games aren't for me. I've never been into them much. I get anxious doing anything being timed, or I'll go overboard on the controls (hyper clicking or whatever) and it just frustrates me. The only games I like are thinking games like Scrabble Blast, or Planetary (moving lines so that they don't touch each other) etc..etc.. and those aren't really escapes LOL I suppose my only escape is when I unwind with a beer or 2, 4, 8  every once in awhile.  ShawnB39093.6024537037 I love my games. I think they actually keep my sanity !

Geez just look at the PC game Riven that makes you want to escape reality and stay in that world.
I love stuff like that. Simulation and role-playing too.

I also have fun  playing board games and card games when friends are around too.But I like being in my own liitle gaming world. I can tell it's good for me.

Of course I also wish I had a beach and a dog in front of my doorstep that would be another great escape.

I also wish people would dance together regularly like they did in the 50's and before that.

So far I haven't got into  "Jacka*s" Johnny Knoxville, type boredom yet doing stuff like this:

Think those guys

from Jacka*s have ADHD ? I would ask them if I could.

Something I read that worldisround posted made me think.

How many people here use Computer/Video games as a sanctuary from having to constantly think?

I have played computer games for years. It seems to be the only thing I can do that I can comfortably hyperfocus on without the frustration of being distracted. It is nonproductive in a certian sense but it does seem to give my brain peace. Sure I enjoy them, but I think part of the enjoyment is being able to unplug from the real world.

Sure I do, hell, it's the only time I get a break from my own mind. LOL

Try this one...

Ah- Yes Video games are my refuge from myself. It is the only time I do not really worry or "think" at all. Nearly completely mind numbing- Sadly I do need to feel this way sometimes or life just gets too overwhelming. I used a be a hardcore FPS fan, and now I'm hooked on Age of Empires 2, which used to give me fits off medication.

IMHO, school shootings are occuring because of a combination of some of the following: Lack of respect instilled in many youth, increasing pressure in school at that age, phsycoligical problems, and a lack of constructive outlets for anger and frustration.

IMHO, society sees anger as a bad thing. Anger is an emotion just like happiness. Anger can even save your life. Its when anger is mismanaged that it becomes a problem. Holding it in makes it build until it comes out in uncontrollable ways. I feel we are taught to just not get angery, which is stupid. Its like saying we can just say "NO" to an emotion. We have to learn to address and blow off tension in our own little ways, before it becomes detromental.

I like to use the phrase "Violence fix", its not exactly accurate for what I use it for but it feels right. Let me explain. Everyone has to let frustrations and anger out in their own way. Whether it's playing computer games (taking out frustrations on virtual things), sports and excersise ( working it off physically), or verbally (like yelling curse words when you bang your knee).

As far as computer games making us killers. Before video games boys played "Guns" around the neihborhood and shot imaginary bad guys. I played guns as a boy and continue to shoot bad guys in computer games, and I have yet to feel like shooting someone. Video games are a quick answer but not a real solution. The only way I will ever agree that video games are any real influence is when the person has physcological problems already, like not knowing the difference between a game and real life.

While I'm on the topic another thing that could effect it is. Children are protected too much today. Nobody wants their kids to fail or get hurt, but too much harbouring of a person denies them a mature perception of the real world. Children need to learn certain lessons by experiencing it for themselves. Learning from real world experience versus being told what a result of an action might be is what defines the level of empathy in a person.

Example: Everyone has burned their finger before. If I had never burned my finger before how would I empathize with someone when they burn themselves? How would I know what it feels like?

On the other hand if the anti-video game people are right, then I better not watch "Broke Back Mountain" or I might lose interest in women and start kissing guys.

My husband loves playing games like that too but he is no "redneck". I want to start playing shoot em ups too.
Here in germany they are blaming these games for school shooting and want to ban them !!

What a crock ! They need to get at the root of the problem which is bullying (the reasons- and how to stop the bullying).

I guess its because im a guy, but I play about anything where you kill something or blow something up. God I sound like such a redneck. Guess I will have to get a gun rack for my truck now.

"Hey yall hold my beer an watch this" <-- last words of a redneck. Well I am from the south.
