Adderall and Cold Medicine effects???? | ADHD Information

Uh red flag. ALWAYS call a pharmacy before doing something like that. Pseudoephedrine which is a decongestant is a stimulant as well and certainly should not be mixed with any CNS stimulant.

HOWEVER, highly effective pseudoephedrine was taken out of most cold medications and replaced with ineffective Phenylephrine. You have to actually go to the pharmacy and have them record your information to buy pseudoephedrine (thank the bush administration for that one).

I do not know about the interactions of Phenylephrine with CNS stimulents such as adderall.

(Personally speaking as a chemist I would never mix anything with adderall and I am pretty sure if you ask a pharmacist they would agree for the most part).

My son is 9 years old and taking Adderall. Over the weekend he was running a fever and was not on his meds. He stopped having a fever Sat. afternoon and I felt he was fine to go to school on Monday. However, he has still had a slight cough and stuffy nose. I've been giving him a cold medicine. Triamenic I believe it is. Everyday he's come home looking as if he is just exhausted and so sad. He hasn't wanted to play and been kinda depressed like. Could combining the two meds have an effect like that? Anyone have experience with this?

[/QUOTE] I don't give my son anything with a decongestant in it, since
pseudoephredine and the other new one are both related to
amphetamines, like Adderall, so I assume they would increase the effect. I
just try to dry him up with Claritin, or we use Mucinex if he has a cough...
that works best of all. And of course two boxes of kleenex in each room,
with paper bags by each one, so he has no excuse to ignore the state of
his nose. But that is another story...

Or maybe your son just has one of those bugs that take a while to kick... I
hope he is feeling better soon!

Childrens Tylenol cold & cough has psuedoephedrine in it.  I found that out when my dd was ill.  I called the pharmacy to see if she could take it while on her meds.  They said no, she should only take regular childrens Tylenol.  I am glad I called first!
