Call the pediatrician and ask if they can do a fingerstick blood sample for a hemoglobin assay in the office. This is a quick way to see if anemia is the problem. If it is, there are other tests that can pinpoint the cause (CBC, iron stores, etc.).
The most common type of anemia is due to iron deficiency (followed by folic acid and/or B12). This can be corrected with iron and vitamin C (helps with absorption). There are liquid and pill forms of the vitamin. Avoid tea and other tanin containing things with meals, avoid things that reduce stomache acid while taking the iron. Do not start taking iron without knowing that a deficiency is present; this could lead to excessive iron stores and complications.
