Kicked out of school! | ADHD Information

Share

I talked to the school counselor today and she said that they can't keep him out of school because they didn't have me sign some paper and that they didn't have me sign it because they knew that I would be on top of getting Ethan taken care of and getting him to the right people that he needs to see.

So he did stay home today but he does get to go back on monday and they will just watch him closely.

Hopefully he will get to see his new DR today but I bet it will be more like sometime next week because I have to get a letter from his Psychologist saying that she no longer is seeing him and that he is free to see another DR. And she is closed today.

So that sucks my hands are kinda tied today.

But I will keep everything posted and let everyone know how things are going.

Thanks for all the support. I do feel a little better right now.

i've been there. when my son was in a private preschool he was uncontrollable for them then i had the public school system evalute him where he is now in a prep class which is smaller more structured class room where they work on his weaknesses and he is doing great now. its hard and i felt like my hands where tied also and just wanted to pull my hair out. i felt so alone at that time and didn't know what to do. the mixed emotions can take their toll on you. but it gets better once you find the right resources. hang in there and don't give up. your child has  only you to relie on for you have his best interest at heart. good luck and keep us posted on him.  yall are in my praysIs the "paper" they didn't have you sign a Behavior Contract?

I posted a topic the other day of "In Desperate Need Of Help" Telling everything about my son. As if I have already not been in the middle of a nervous breakdown all week.

My son got kicked out of school yesterday. Because he went into an episode and started yelling saying that he wanted me and that he hated the principle saying that he threatning to kill everyone and then when they were taking him to the principles office he kicked a little boy that was sitting in the floor.

They said that he is not allowed to come back until he has had another psychological evaluation saying that he is mentally stable enough to come back and that he will not hurt anyone.

I am changing his DR's down from two to just one. They told me about a DR yesterday that comes to the school and works with children like Ethan. She does her sessions at school she watches how he interacts at school and she will regulate his meds from week to week. I think she only works with kids at the school. And they said that if she were already his DR she would have been down to the school as soon as she got a phone call about Ethan and the way he was acting.

I think this will be good. Because someone can actually see him in his environment instead of in a office room. And his meds will be watched and changed as needed.

She will also be able to test him to see if he has autism or aspergers.

But I have to get ride of his psychiatrist and his psychologist before his ins will pay for her.

Sorry this too was so long. And thanks for everyone's support on my other post. I'm just gonna cry now.

FAPE is free access to public education, which they are REQUIRED to provide as per IDEA.Oh good Lord!  Well, here's a big hug for you.  It sounds like you're doing the right thing.  I would think that having a doctor being as far away as a phone call from the school and able to see your son in his scholastic environment would be a good thing, too.  Keep us posted on how things go and take care of yourself, too.Oh hon....I hope that you can get your little boy the help that he needs to become successful in school.  I feel so badly for you and wish you better times! There's a legal process that they need to follow, and they still need to provide him with FAPE. They can't simply state that he cannot come back until evaluated. It doesn't work that way.

I am so sorry you are having to go through this.  My heart really goes out to you.  It sounds similar to what we are going through too.

I am glad that he will be able to return to school.  It is very good you are getting more testing.  Many times an ADHD dx is just the beginning.  I was going to look at the your other post to see if you mentioned any meds.  My son was uncontrollable at times and he is now off ADHD meds and is on Risperdal.

ok, I just read your other post and saw that your son is already taking Risperdal.

Many of the things you described sound like the autism spectrum.  Also there is something called Sensory Processing Disorder.  Many autisic kids have it.  My son has it.  It is diagnosed by an Occupational Therapist.  I suggest you do this asap!  It is often misdiagnosed as ADHD.  If you son has it, the Strattera is probably making him worse.  This is what happend with my son.  We also tried Lexapro and it made him flip out, similar to the episode you described.  Now my son is only on Risperdal and doing much better.

My son is way too hyper with out meds.  He litterly bounces off the wall and the furniture.

And his risperdahl is my life saver. Without that he is not fun to be around.

What does an Occupational Therapist do? I've asked several times on here but I don't think anyone has ever actually answered.

Oh my goodness! He is a crasher!!!!  You have to read up on this!!!  I sent you some info in a pm but forgot you changed names!

Here is the link I sent you..     http://www.kidfoundation.org/what/spd.html#living

To answer you about OT I am typing some info that is explained in the book Sensational Kids.  OT is a theraputic program designed to improve the quality of the child's life by increasing daily living skills.  The therapsit needs to be trained in sensory-based therapises.  In the school setting the OT facilitates relevent adaptions and accomendations to improve performance at school.  Such as arrange whereand how sits the child sits in the classroom.  And they can help with handwriting techniques and visual perception.  And for private sessions, the focus is to modify the underlying neurological systems beleived to impair motor functioning and behavior. Children learn to recognize and verbalize the sensations that create problems fro them.

Not sure what the paper was, she didn't say and I didn't ask.

She just called it the paper. And he is able to go back to school Monday.

I have an appt with the new DR Monday at 11 to get things started. The first appt will be with just me to discuss Ethan without him being there. Which is good cause I don't like to talk about him in front of him.

I never want him to feel like there is something wrong with him.

O and I figured out my user name. so I'm young mom again.

Oh, dear.  I am so thankful we never had this kind of problem.  And I am even more sorry that you have this to deal with.  First, I will touch on the "paper" you signed.  If it was not a notarized "paper", it's not a legal binding contract.  Just because the school has us sign papers (ours has a behavior contract) doesn't make it legal.  The only way it is legal is if it is notarized.  (My one time experience with that to back that statement up is we had a parent challenge that at the end of the school year last year and all she did was go the the school board meeting and say, it's not notarized so it's not a legal binding contract. and that was the end of it. lol).  So, Next, the behavior really sounds much more than just adhd.  So, I'm glad you are getting him further testing and a different doc.  One can never have enough opinions.  I wish I could help you more, but if there is any thing I could offer, just ask!  My thoughts are with you.

Welcome to the board!

Just wanted to clerify that I didn't sign the paper.

She said they didn't ask me to sign it because they knew that I would get Ethan the help he needed.

What is FAPE?

Sounds like my 7yr - 1st grd son. Our boy has been tested at school and classified as "gifted and talented" which qualifies him to periodically see a special teacher who can monitor his progress and challenge him when he feels bored with school. He's doing very well academically, but socially he struggles.

He recently got suspended for hitting a classmate and hitting a teacher. Well, here's what we believed happened in school that day...

Our son was at recess (he's always has struggles at recess, because he wants the games and playtime to go HIS WAY). When they were told to line up to go back to class, a girl (who also has behavior issues) cut in front of him, and she wouldn't go to the back of the line. So, my son tried to make her go back. She resisted and he hit her (of course, not appropriate). Next, a teacher (who doesn't know our son) saw this, and went after our son. He ran and hid under a desk. So the teacher grabbed him and pulled him out (not a smart choice on her part!). So he exploded and hit the teacher. The principal suspended him for 2 days.

You may ask, why am I writing this? Because I think sometimes school authorities would rather kick ADHD kids out of school rather than try to understand them and help them by pairing them off with the right kind of teachers who know how to handle them.

Our son is medicated which seems to work well for him. He's also in Behavioral Therapy once a week to help him learn how to handle his emotions, especially his anger and anxiety, and possible OCD issues. We haven't needed an IEP with the school, and hopefully we won't get to that point. But that may be in the future if his disorder gets worse.

Just wanted to write to say I can relate to what you're going through.
