Swags92,
Meds aren't always the answer. They can have detamental and horrible side effects and only god knows what the long term out come will be. I have some suggestions for natural therepy if your intrested. The best advice I can give you is reserch, research, resarch. Know inside and out what you are doing before you decide. Meds are very scary stuff and knowledge is power. I'm not saying that the don't work! They sure do what they are desighed to do. They don't fix the problem and we are comming very close to pin pointing the causes of these disorders. I only tell you this based on MY personal exspereinces. I hope this helps a little.
I'll be praying for your family.
Well said, as usual, chasesmom79.
It's really scary to see your little one going through something this enormous, isn't it, swags92? Five is very little. You know what, though? Kevin is blessed to have a parent who loves him and is working on his behalf. A lot of kids don't have that, or have parents who are in denial.
You're doing what you need to do, for your baby's well-being. You'll get there. Hugs.
Please do not blame yourself for your son's ADHD. As emergent says, you are not to blame....do you "blame yourself" for his eye/hair color or other inherited features?
That being said, the medication roller coaster can be a scary ride until you hit upon the "right" med for your child, then you will know that it was worth every moment! With your dotor's help, and your and your son's feedback, through trial and error ( i know, a scary thought) you will find the med that helps your son to succeed in school and at home. If your insurance covers it (or your pocketbook can stand it) get a child psychiatrist on board to help your family through therapy. Studies have shown that a combination of therapy + medication results in the best outcome.
Check out a positive behavior discipline system....a good one is ogram's marble system (top stickied thread in this forum) and get it in place at home. You may find that your 4 year old is parroting behaviors that he has seen his older brother exhibit. A system like this may alleviate some of those behaviors. If your younger son does indeed get diagnosed with the same disorder as your older one, well at least you will have been down that road before and it will be a familiar trail.
Good luck and keep us posted!

Hang in there swags. It can be a long journey sometimes until the right medication and dose is achieved. The target does for stimulant medication is not based on weight or size. Its very individual and that's why the patient must go through a trail of meds. Its very individual. Once the target dose and right med is found, medication when taken as prescribed has proven to be the most effective form of treatment in terms of managing the symptoms of ADHD.
This is not your fault and please don't beat yourself up about it. Your on the right track and eventually you will find a treatment plan that will allow your child quality of life . However, if it is suspected that Kevin might have bipolar disorder, its smart that your consulting with a child psychiatrist to either confirm or deny a diagnosis of bipolar disorder as a child psychiatrist has the expertise to make a differential diagnosis and is most trained in med management. Stimulant medication can exacerbate the symptoms of bipolar disorder so at this point its crucial that you get an accurate diagnosis. Whatever decisions you make, base them on accurate knowledge, not fear. Vent away any time as that's what we are here for. Hugs to you.
Ok this may be TMI but here goes. My mom had BiPolar disorder, my brother has ADHD and Bipolar disorder, and my dad and I both suffer from depression. Well I prayed and prayed that I would not pass any of this on to my children. Well I guess I did not pray enough because in August my oldest son Kevin was diganosed with ADHD. Well his meds did not do what they should so we consulted a new doctor a child pshycologist and we found out that Kevin not only has ADHD but also has a mood disorder which could be depression or bipolar, he is too young yet to say for sure which one it is. So I am really bumming right now. Not only that but my youngest son who is going to be 4 next month is showing some of the same signs and has issues with anger and defiance.
With all of this Kevin has started to act up in the classroom. He argues and yells at his teacher, he needs a partner to help him stsy with his learning group, He parellel plays instead of playing with the others. When he does try to play he wants to be the boss and controll everything. When working at his seat he stands by his chair and is in constant movement. He also has started to tell me that he is board in school and that he is in school too long (he only goes 1/2 day).
Right now we are on day 2 of being on medadate cd 20mg and day 3 of being on zoloft 25mg. So far we have not seen any changes yet. His behavior is back to where it was when we first started. Now the doctor did say that 20 mg of the medadate is most likely to low. if he continues to act out like he is I'll be calling the doctor on Wednesday, he said because of my son's size he can have up to 36 mg.
Sorry for this but I just needed to vent. I know there was nothing I could do to stop this but being a parent it is sometimes hard not to blaime myself.
You're not to blame for heredity. (Somebody had to say it.)
How old is Kevin?
