distractability in the bathroom | ADHD Information

Oh she is not touching herself but taking toys in there to play with and will sit on the floor in there playing.  When she looks in the mirror she plays making faces. this is a new one to me!  what about putting a timer in there? or a sign above hte toliet or near the sink remeinder her to wash her hands- like one of the signs they have in public restrooms.Jilette...maybe it is the mirror? I wonder if you put a nice big mirror in her room, maybe on the back of her door, if she would play there then...she could make faces into the mirror in there...worth a try...Oh my gosh!  We went through a phase where she would just stay in the bathroom and keep trying to look at her privates.....finally, I just gave her a mirror (TMI) and told her to to look all she needed to until her curiosity was satisfied!    Also, we noticed this behavior when her stimulant dose was pretty high, so I think it was a side effect, also.I can try the timer the idea Kemi as for as the big mirror it was there when we bought the house.  So far at public restrooms she has to check out each stall for nothing is good enough for her then she goes into one of them and it takes her forever she has her ritual before sitting and going and will sit there awhile after going.  When she comes out it is okay she is ready then i take her to the sink and again it takes all day for she has to play then anyone else in the bathroom she feels she has to give them paper towels.  Yes I feel she has OCD and did have her screened and the psychologist feels it is not affecting daily life and she has the tendencies and it is just a "pain" for now.  I think he does not want to label her at this time and the school Social Worker talked to me and expressed I should screen her for it and I told her I did so now I need to call the psychologist again, Arrgggg it never ends. I will be eagerly watching this thread for an answer to this problem... I
have a six-minute video of my son, you can see his legs dangling from
the toilet as he kicks the loose toilet paper roll back and forth from one
foot to the other while singing "The Big Rock Candy Mountain". And he
had been doing it long enough before that for me to notice, go get the
camera, find a tape... He always forgets something, either wiping,
flushing, washing, or shutting out the light. We made a huge poster with
potty rules on it that is on the wall in the hallway across from the
bathroom door. When he leaves the bathroom like a rocket launched him,
he often runs right into the sign, yet doesn't see it. It does help though-
if I asked him, did you do everything you should in the bathroom? He will
always say yes, but if I ask if he did everything on the sign, he will think,
then run back to do the missing step.

I like chasesmom79's idea of putting a mirror somewhere else... that is
another big distractor for him. He is six and still cannot brush his own
teeth, because the mirror is too distracting. I think I will try that.Lately my child has been going to the bathroom at home and starts playing in the bathroom afterwards without washing hands or pulling up her drawers and will run around the house with them wrapped around her ankles.  Oh and if she is playing in there and you have to go forget it and if you toss her out the behavior afterwards makes you crazy.  She also has OCD not officially diagnosed which I am working on.  Arrgggg!  I am so afraid what if she does this in school even on meds.
