adhd meds and high blood pressure | ADHD Information
I have an adult friend who is trying strattera for the same reason....high BP and her diabetes limit her choices for ADHD meds. In her case, I think both her diabetes and BP would be controlled with a healthier diet and weight loss (her staples are fast food most days). You might talk to the doctor about a combo of guanfacine and your current bp meds. Guanfacine is a blood pressure med that is used to treat some ADHD symptoms. This might help some, until the bp is under control and you can consider ADHD meds.I have primary hypertension - even when I was exercising 5 times per week and was in great shape my bp was very high. I'm trying to control it with meds. Does anyone out there know of something I could take for ADHD even though I have HPB? As I see it the stimulants will just increase the blood pressure. I'm seeing a psychiatrist, and she wants to get the blood pressure "controlled" before I try something, but I can't seem to get it down, even with meds. The ADHD is ruining my life! Parenting a child with ADHD when you have it yourself is really hard!dolphenjen.....If you don't have a cardiologist monitoring your blood pressure and managing the meds, I recommend you see one first. There are several different blood pressure meds and its wise to have a cardiologist make recommendations in terms of high blood pressure medications. Assuming you get your blood pressure under control, the cardiologist will give you clearance to take stimulant meds . Not everyone's pressure elevates when they take stimulant meds. My son has high blood pressure and stimulant meds didnt elevate his pressure. However, everyone is different so before you consider taking stimulant medication, I would get checked out by a cardiologist first as first and foremost, getting the pressure under control is a priority. The cardioligst will let you know if its safe for you to take ADHD medication. Anyone that has high blood pressure should always get clearance from a cardiologist. Continue exercising and keeping your weight down.
