thanks everyone...  I'm betting that my son would not qualify.  He has ad/hd but is only on 5 mg/nutritional diet and is doing great at school for the most part.  At home we have our moments but nothing that is major.  I will keep this in mind though for the future.  I know that things can change.  I know it did for my son's dad.

young mom good luck in your quest for SSI... I'm new at being a single mom and  I know that even on the best days it is hard.

Again, thanks Jillette and young mom for your input.

Could someone explain what  entitles someone to qualify for SSI?  My son's dad is currently unable to pay child support due to some health issues.  I've heard through the grapevine that I could apply for SSI for my son, but I'm not really sure what  that involves.

SSI is for anyone who is considered disabled.  IF your child has enough difficulty of DX then you could be entitled to SSI for him.

I just checked into on the internet just go to google and put in SSI for your state.

It also said that you have a better chance of getting it if you have an attorney representing you and that most of them do not charge if you do not win and if you do its a flat fee or I believe they said back pay or something like that. Maybe if you don't pay the flat rate they get a % of your monthly check.

I filled out a thing on line for my son just a few mins ago and it said to expect someone to call me on it today.

Good Luck!!!

You go down to the social security office to get the forms and complete them, make sure you have lots of documentation on your son's diagnosis the more the better.  If the more they  see it affects his daily life the better it would entitle him.  Also most get denied first time applying then you try again and get an attorney to help there are some free ones out there that only collect when you win the case and they take it out of what you get.  Once approved you get back money to the time you first applied.  I have to let you know it takes a year if you are up for it unfortunetly.  I am a case manager/social worker and have applied for my clients numerous times bu never for my own child.  Good luck jill Jillette  Does it not help to get an attorney to do it the first time around. I would rather do that than to do it myself. If you present enough proof and documantation on everything.I applied in September for my ds. I am still waiting to hear back. I had to call last week to update my ds's information , new dx and meds. They had till 2/17 to make a decession, I think it will be longer now that they have to contact a new DR. I will keep everyone updated.
Jillette  Does it not help to get an attorney to do it the first time around. I would rather do that than to do it myself. *You can to see if you have a case it has just been my experience they try to reject the first atttempt.  Getting an attorney may cut back some of the bologna involved.
We had a SSI discussion a while back and one of the posters cautioned against getting SSI ( unless it is absolutly necessary) because of the label that is attached.  I believe she was taking about military service for the future but I am not sure....does anyone remember this?
*I have not tried applying but in a sense our children are already labled, school records.  I personally do not want this route unless it was a last resort for I do not want my girl growing up with the mentality that she does not have to work and just collect benefits I want her to give life a shot but am keeping all documentation to go for it if it became necessary.

Young Mom - does your state or county have any programs that could help you?  I have a friend with two special needs boys, and after she went through a divorce she was able to get help with sitters through the county - I think that they had some financial assistance, as well as people who were willing/able to watch special needs children so she could get out and do some of the things she needed to do.

I have an appointment with SSI on 1/23 for both my boys. I have to get all of their evals ready, but I actually think they have to be diagnosed for 1 year to get anything at all. My big guy was diagnosed in April of last year, so im not sure what will happen. Sadly, you are not alone in this quest. Good luck!We had a SSI discussion a while back and one of the posters cautioned against getting SSI ( unless it is absolutly necessary) because of the label that is attached.  I believe she was taking about military service for the future but I am not sure....does anyone remember this?

I wondered how it affected them as adults if you did this as children but was told that they would get evaluated every year and if they ever had an eval that they were thought to no longer be disabled (meaning there disablilities were no longer affecting their everyday lives) then they would be able to go on and live normal lives.

If this is untrue and it does affect them as adults I would really like to hear about it.

I do need the money cause it is very hard for me to work because of all his disabilities. because no one will watch him and when they do they don't for very long. I do taxes during tax season and that's it. Because it's the only job I have found that allows me to work around his school schedule and leave it he has difficulty at school.

Please if anyone knows more about this topic I am all hears.

LOL    I mean all ears not hears LOL

Young Mom, I think you made good points and with your sons diagnosis I would hope that you have a good shot of getting this.  Let us know what happens.

Ok I applied for SSI for DS in September.....They just called me today, said they have a decision and needed me to call and update info. Well I did not get the message until after the office was closed. Now I will be on pins and needles until Monday. Thank goodness monday is not a holiday...lol

I remember the post, i believe she also said that it follows you as well once you try to get a job when you are older. And that if your child will be able to have somewhat of a normal life when there older you should not get ssi for them. Cause it will follow them.(the label)

That being said, i have two boys who recieve ssi. They recieve it under their Traumatic Brain Injury they sustained back in 99. It was alot of paper work, def make sure you have all your records and people who can also describe your son. For the state of Va, you can fill it out online now. And either send it online or print it out and take it to your local social security. Once you recieve ssi, its normaly once a month, you have to submit your paystubs monthly(atleast for va) if you are working or your husband(in our case my hubby)You need to keep track of what you used the money for cause at the end of the year they will folllow up and send a form asking what you spent it for. Recreation stuff, or household/bills etc.You can see a form online to see what it looks like. For us we get it normaly the last day of the month or beggining. They go by our childrens needs/hubby's pay/the price to take care of kids in the area. Good Luck to you

We got it. I was able to get SSI for my son. They went back to September and found that he was approved for SSI but not for the money payment due to us making too much because I got Unemployment.  I don't care about the money I am just glad that we will get the medical card that will help out a lot with the meds. Now starting next month since I don't get unemployment anymore we will get parcial payments.

I have a few friends that keep after me to apply.  I cannot work full time.  It would be impossible because I really don't have care for her.  My mother is 71 and takes care of her for a couple hours a day and has been doing summer care and it's getting to be way too much for her.  My medical insurance is through the roof and sucks up a fat chunk of my paycheck.  I do get child support but it is not much.  The cost of meds is killing me.  There are meds that I should be taking but I can't afford to.  DD should probably be in counseling but I can't afford that either.  (Can you believe a dollar a visit copay for mental health?!!?!! - Unreal!)  Ex is suppose to pay half of all uninsured medical expenses - fat chance!  I should apply.  What kind of documentation do you need?

Go on-line and you can read all about it. social security disability. What state are you in? Your daughter may be eligible for supplemental health insurance also. I am in Massachusetts we have Masshealth. Some kids are eligible. Mine is not, but Massachusetts is one of the tougher states for eligility. Diane V39272.4576273148
