Hi.
My son is 12 y/o on concerta 54 mg which works faily well for his ADHD. He has been on Concerta for the past 3 years. During the 10 -12 hour span he fairly good and tolerable. When it wears off at 7 pm he gets loud, noisy, silly, active, wants attention, and cannot find anything to do to keep him quiet. On a rare night he will play the computer or watch tv. I have tried activites but this only hold his attention for awhile. Do I send him to his room , which he is resistant to do. It seems ignoring the behavior certainly does not work. Anyone out there have any suggestions. Do I insist he go to his room when this behavior starts .I do not want to medicate him at night also.
He really distrupts the family and is ruining any kind of relationship we have with our daughter. I really feel sorry for my non- ADHD daughter (15). Every thing seems to be around Sean and his behavior.

vickie...great minds think alike.....LOLHave you tried being explicit about what is expected Sean will behave like in the evenings? For example, instead of telling him not to be loud, you can tell him to lower his voice while playing or speaking. Also be sure to hold him accountable for his inappropriate behavior with a short and appropriate punishment as well as rewarding him on the days when he has behaved well. Try to go easy on minor things and choose your battles. Children with ADHD are in constant motion and their hyperactive behavior is not a choice. (Just something to remember when you are feeling impatient or overwhelmed). Have you tried channeling that energy into physical activities such as taking the dog for an evening walk or giving him chores to complete such as taking out the garbage? Some parents find the movement of a rocking chair helps sooth and calm their child and will sit them on the chair while watching television or reading.
