If the anxiety is due to dealing with the difficulties of ADHD (as my daughter's was), taking a stimulant and successfully relieving the symptoms of the ADHD can make the anxiety go away (by stopping the root cause). If the anxiety is not a result of ADHD but is a separate disorder, taking stims can make it worse and an anti-anxiety med should be started prior to starting a stim. This is all stuff that you can work out with the prescribing doctor. I would suggest a psychiatrist that is experienced managing medication for ADHD and co-morbid conditions.
Soberxinsanity. I too suffer from adhd and anxiety. Unfortuately, the psychiatrist that I see now is insensitive and a poor listener. I would try to get refferred by a friend or someone who has first hand knowledge. Certainly someone who specializes in ADHD would be ideal, but that "bedside manner" and true interest in helping you are so important. Try to be patient, though. It's a process. Getting the right Doc and making sure you are very clear about what's going on with you seems to be key in getting better faster.
Good luck!
Which docs are best for ADHD treatment? I had in mind a psychiatrist specializing in ADHD...are these specialists better when dealing with a comorbid disorder, such as anxiety?(which is an issue for me)are ADHD meds even an option for me? The medical write-ups are vague; some say NOT to take it if you have anxiety, some say to use it with caution--and I am seeing a social worker wo is telling me they would calm me down but I would experience anxiety as a rebound effect. I also saw a neurologist in the past who said he doesn't think they are contra-indicated. I don't know who's right, who's wrong, or what I'm supposed to expect. Everybody says something different; who am I supposed to believe?hailtothe thief, what kind of doc do you have?If you cannot go to a psychiatrist, you may need to work with a GP or even a pediatrician that has some experience with adhd meds. It will probably take time to find a doctor you can work effectively with, but will be worth it. You might even have to take in articles to educate the doctor on the current treatment modalities of adult adhd. Some doctors are happy to have educated patients that are active in thier healthcare, I avoid the other type.If you go to this site, you can get references from other patients. It worked
