control over emotions | ADHD Information

thanks, malcolm...looks like I'm pretty much alone on this...I'm a teenager but the adult board seems to be more active than the young adult one and I figured you guys would have had more experience with this: What does it mean when you cannot control mental excitability? (Anyone who read the hyperfocus post in this board, this is similar) Along with the obsessions/hyperfocus that is described in the other post, it seems that my mind gets overly excited and I cannot inhibit it. Is this a normal ADD problem or is it something else? Are there treatments that would help this?

HI Sober x

the over excitability can be slowed by "speed"

once you see a psychiatrist and get medicated it will slow down a lot

Do you mean the kind of excitablilty where your mind keeps racing and you can't seem to stop the thoughts, or that you you get excited about something and sort of obsess (or overfocus) on it?  They are definetely both ADHD type things.  I think that you do get better at getting this stuff under control with age- although I remember how much I hated hearing that as a teenager and it doesn't really help you now, does it?

Are you on meds?  Do you see a therapist/shrink?  Both of these have helped me, but especially the meds.  They slow the mind down and allow you to process and react to things less impulsively.  Cognitive- behavioral therapy is also supposed to be good for teaching you ways to cope.

You might also want to read some books on living with ADHD.  I found Delivered From Distraction to be helpful- it might be more useful for you to check out ones geared toward adults rather than kids if you're older, but there might be good ones specifically for teens that I don't know about.

Yoga, breathing and Zen can assist to quiet the mind.

Certainly there are some situations where it is fine for your mind to become excited.

If you are driving, you might want to develop routines of certain muscle dynamic tensioning exercises, and breathing patterns to assist you to get back into a calmer state of mind.

I try to take naps, to get better under control.

There are other factors that affect my contol over my mind. I try to avoid build-up of fluids in the glands. The Lymph system can benefit form 10 minutes of light exercise on a trampoline everyday. The lymph system assists in removing various waste products from the glands, and keeping fluid flows from stagnating keeps the immune system mor resilient and resitant toward disease, and calms the mind.

I am riding an electric bicycle 30 minutes a day, some 10 days a month. How many days a month are you exercising?

Really???? I have severe lymph problems, constant drainage from throat and ears, constant ear infections, and my back teeth, even with constant brushing are infected and rotting away! Exercise helps me when I remember to do so. Adderall XR helps with my swelling and drainage, until it wears off, then I'm in pain again!

Funny you mentioned that, I'm going to research that, and I wonder if infection and ADHD are related. Also to keep in topic, also I have severe mood and emotional swings.

It drives me insane! What other things helps with emotional instability? I used to be happy when I could always be on my computer playing games in the privacy of my own home. ^^thanks. I am not on ADHD meds...I am taking 5 mg. generic ritalin inconsistently to help me wake up in the morning, but it's doing absolutely nothing and I'm looking for a new doctor anyway that is more open-minded and understanding. what meds are you taking for ADHD?

Both the mind racing and the overfocusing are problems for me. it's like my mind won't shut up no matter how hard I try. this is what limits my attentiveness to other things...whatever I become excited about takes over my mind.

Otter39111.7095833333I used to do this with strong emotions such as anger, medication and age helps.

I think racing thoughts from an ADHD med is very unusual- typically it has the opposite effect.  Not sure which thread you read that in, but sometimes if a child is misdiagnosed the meds will have very undesirable effects.

Hang in there, though.  The waiting sucks and doctors rarely take into account the fact that their patients are not the best at waiting for things anyhow, but you'll get there.

on another thread, someone said their child had "racing thoughts" from an ADHD med. I have that problem now without the meds and I don't want it to get worse, because that is my main innattention issue. also, it kinda ties in to the hyperfocusing/obsessions because when I become interested in something, my mind goes on and on about this one thing and everything else is extremely dull in comparison. I saw a new doc last week and he wrote me out a rx for concerta, ne just wants an EKG before I start..ugh, it's like everytime I get so close to taking a med I have to wait awhile before starting.

In a nutshell, your higher brain does not have enough energy to cotrol "lower" brain so that you cannot modulate your emotions your behavior like others and it is very distressing. Stimuants will help.

I am actually doing a lot of personal and scientific research on the subject and would love to hear more about the exact nature of your emotions. If you do not feel comfortable sharing everything on the forum which is understandable, you can contact me privately. badvsadhd@yahoo.com

You are probably not seeing the right doc. Meds need to be adjusted carefully, but they DO HELP in most cases. Many Dr do not know how to use them.
