Hi,

My 11 son has been on Concerta and Focalin. The Dr. Wants to add Risperdal in the evenings. I am afraid of this drug. Does anyone here take it for their child? If so can you share your story? Does it works? What is the Diagnosis? Side effects?

Thanx,

KH

Bump. Noone here on risperdal?

I know I have seen posts on it...did you try to do a search on this forum?

It takes some time to load but here is a link:

vickie39100.8351736111Thanks. Although the search feature wasn't working for a while I was able to finally do a search. It seems like extreme weight gain is a major side effect of Risperdal. My son is already chubby. Another reason for me NOT to want this med. I don't think I will start him on it. I want another opinion. Why is the doctor wanting this med to be added? My son used to take risperdal. he was on it for only a couple of days.  It caused my son to become a zombie he was so tired all the time and all he wanted to do was eat non stop.  I did not like this medication at all. I think that tenex (guanfacine) has some of the same calming effects without the major sedating effects.

Our DS (age 7) has had an adverse reaction to multiple stimulants - very irritable, angry, etc. for over a year.  We were put on Risperdal about 12 days ago to counter the effects of the stimulus.  (I fear it is a misdiagnosis of ADHD and that is why he is having these reactions.  The doctor hesitates to diagnose bipolar (although there is a family history, suicide, and alcoholism).  He is swaying more towards the PDD side - which I totally do not see.)

I don't know if the Risperdal has had this effect - but we have had a very good 12 days.  We have had almost NO temper tantrums.  There has been one or two crying episodes instead of 3-4 per day.  He is really skinny so weight gain is not a problem but we haven't seen any yet.  I am not even sure it should be effective yet.

Anyway, so far, so good.
