you say that the meds help initially then he begins having social issues?

Many times ADHD does not affect grades until 3rd or 4th grade when the work gets more difficult.  Many of these children are very intelligent, and are able to just absorb enough to get decent grades until then.  The teacher should know this, but....

You may discuss adding tenex (guanfacine) to augment the stimulant with your doctor.  It sometimes helps with impulsiveness, anger, frustration, aggression, and when these things are brought under control, the social skills come along..your son has already had the behavior mocification and all the studies show that behavior modification and meds bring about the best result where ADHD is concerned.

This med has helped my son a lot in the month or so he has been taking it.  He no longer gets off the bus daily beside himself with frustration.  The kids still tease him, but he is coping better and learning strategies (besides blowing up at them) like telling the bus driver.  He is calmer and just more mellow.

Go to the medications forum and look for a 5 page thread called "tenex".  It is most likely on the 2nd or 3rd page by now....lots of good info there.  Do your research and ask your doctor what he thinks....

Good luck

Hello, I'm new here and I was hoping for suggestions, advice, sanity savers, anything!!! My son is 6 and has been diagnosed ADHD since last year. We have tried lots to avoid medicine, to no avail. We've taken him to a psychologist (who pronounced him a normal little boy), spent 8 months in behavior modification classes, had him evaluated out the wazoo, tried all kinds of reward systems, etc. I work part time as a librarian, so I've read everything I could get my hands on. Nothing has helped. Since he was struggling in kindergarten we decided to go ahead and ride the medication train. His teacher didn't agree with the ADHD diagnosis (she received her medical degree when?) because it's not his schoolwork that's the problem in the least, it's his social skills. Well, at first the meds helped, then the social issues stated again, so change meds, same thing happens. He's now on Focalin XR and started out well until this week. He's having some rage/ tantrum issues as well. Could this be something else than ADHD? Anybody?

I agree with Chasesmom79, and also urge you to discuss tenex (guanfacine) with the doctor. My daughter was on concerta and guanfacine with great results. We are on a trial of guanfacine alone right now (too early to tell).Have you read the book "stopping ADHD"? the theory of this book is baby did not crawl enough to fully develop his brain to cause all kinds of behaviors like ADHD. This book suggest to exercise, which is crawling, to treat these symptoms. Someone tried it and had good feedback. Hope it helps.  < ="text/"> // Begin Ad Muncher helper script wYZXso(1,"wYZTimeout('enableDesignMode()', 20);"); // End Ad Muncher helper script

We also have had success with guanfacine.  My dd is also quick to anger, especially with her little sister pushing her buttons.  Another benefit is that it is generic and you can give it a try for not much $$.  And good for you for educating yourself and trying to find the right solution for your son.  I hope you find something that works!
