Hi, just wanted to introduce myself. I just found this board today.
We have a 9yr. old daughter who was recently diagnosed with ADHD.(DEC) Our heads are swimming and our hearts are mending. She is a very creative, active, talkative, happy child who cannot focus and has a hard time with following through and listening to multiple directions, especially at school. She has been held back once and her grades are showing her difficulty. C-D average.
Socially she is very outgoing but does tend to be less mature...IE: she loves to play with babies, has an imaginary friend and is very needy with physical attention (hugs, sitting on laps, snuggling) At times she can be somewhat bossy although she has made much progress in this area since the beginning of the school year.
She has started Adderall 15mg. this week and so far the effects are less than desirable. She stopped singing. Normally our house was under a constant barrage of song. This is breaking my heart. She has been very mopey, even somewhat depressed since starting the meds. We are giving her to Weds. to see if this improves.
Right now, we are just trying to find all the info we can that is available. Our school is not very cooperative. We had a meeting with them to discuss IEP/504 and have been blown off several times. They are taking a "wait and see" approach. This is frustrating since we have asked for help since she was in KDG. Until this year, she was considered "borderline ADHD" and so the pediatrician didn't recommend any treatments. I think we were in denial somewhat (occupational hazzard) and should have persued alternatives earlier. Live and learn I suppose.
So here we are. I'm glad to have found a place to be able to talk to other parents. Our local NAMI gave me other resources to contact next week.
So at any rate, hi! :)
welcome-i am a mother of another 9 year old daughter with adhd. my daughter is also outgoing, but less mature. she's doing okay academically with all of the help that we are giving her, but needs to work on independence, etc.
my dd's first med in november was adderal and she had sleep issues, stomach issues and it was almost like she was hyper focused...her eyes were dialated all day long...anyways, the meds works well for many on this board, but my dd had too many side effects. having said that...i do think that she concentrated better on adderal than the ritalin that she is currently on. the ritalin might need to be upped...we will discuss this at the next dr. appt.
i just wanted to pipe in and say that this is a great place...and many of us are dealing with the same issues. welcome!

Welcome I am a mother of a 7 year old who also has Oppositional Defiancy as well and I know has OCD ( obsession compulsion disorder), her psychologist does not want to label it yet but it is there. TY both for the welcome. :)Welcome, I have an 8yo ADHDer and a 6yo who we think has inattentive type ADD as well as Beckwith Weidemann Syndrome (a whole other story). Anyway one thing this site has taught me is I'm not in this alone.
