I do!

My delivery with our ADHD daughter was induced with Pitocin.  I am curious as to who else had an induced labor and now has an ADHD child.

Yes the cow manure comment was funny!

This is really an interesting queston/debate.  I truly believe in the qenetic link.  As I am helping my son, I realize wow, all of my jokes throughout my life calling myself blond and absentminded are really symptoms of me having ADD.

I do also believe that pregnancy/birth trauma contributed to my son's problems.  My son has ADHD symptoms but is not true ADHD.  My son was (according to the dr) 2 weeks late and I was induced with pitocin.  I also ended up getting an epideral because my contractions went wacko.  The cord was wrapped tightly around his neck and his heartrate dropped with the contractions.  It was getting dangerously low and was almost an emergency C-section but I delivered him quickly.  And after being 2 weeks late he only weighed 5lbs 14oz.  Early in hte pregnancy I had a tear in the placenta that healed.  The ob thinks as my son was late the placenta deteriorated not giving him everything he needed and thinks he actually lost weight those 2 weeks.  My son has SPD and is in hte high functioning autism spectrum.

I was induced with my oldest and he has ADHD and Mood Disorder

My son had difficulty while being born. I almost had a C section but he was taken out using vacumn extraction. They used an epidural.  I also experienced some bleeding while pregnant and had 2 ultrasounds. He is ADHD.

If his ADHD is inherited, I'm not sure where it came from. Nobody that I know of in my family is ADHD. His dad's father may be. He doesn't know him.

I really think that some toxins in the environment make ADHD symptoms worse. Also soem preservatives in our food. I mean back when I was young there were less kids with ADHD.

Part of that is that ADHD inattentive was not diagnosed with any real frequency until the last 10 years or so...and I also think that schools of times past were a lot more tolerant of kids that were a little bit hyperactive, and worked with it, today so much is expected of our kids in school at such younger ages...

There were more recesses and they were longer in my childhood, and the day was not so hectic...I got to walk home each day for lunch, I think the lunch hour was a full hour long.  I remember jump-roping the whole way whenever the weather was fit....Today the kids get maybe a half hour for lunch, and in many cases, they are not allowed to talk and socialize that whole time!

I agree with Chasesmom.  My husband is undiagnosed ADHD, but has a dignosed mental illiness that runs in his family.  I remember my son being seen by a GI specialists shortly after birth for acid reflux and she told us at less than 6 months she could see the ADHD by just the way he reacted to examinations.  We were shocked when sh e told us this, but looking back we wished we would have taken her seriously.

My ds also has sensory intergration disorder which I have undiganosed and also my mother.  Back then things weren't as dignosed as they are now.

His birth was induced with pitocin because my water broke and 24 hrs later still no contractions.  I don't think this in any way could have caused or changed the fact that ADHD is a mental (brain) inherited disorder.

Others may think something else, but we are each entitled to our opinion.  Living with some one that has a mental illiness and his mother, and his grandfather, etc. etc.   IT RUNS IN FAMILIES.  Many may be undignosed, but I bet if you sat down and asked if they had this symptom or that symptom while growing up you would find that there is a gentic root in all of this.

Ok while I agree that environmental and technology may cause some children to exhibit ADHD- like symptoms, I believe that true ADHD is inherited, plain and simple....I have 4 children, all with the same 2 parents, all raised in the same house (in the country, where the only pollution is cow manure....) they all ate the same food, drank the same well water, etc....2 girls, 2 boys...My oldest (a girl) has ADHD inattentive, and my youngest (a boy) has ADHD inattentive.  the middle two are fine, and the 13 year old is extremely smart...

It cannot even be argued that my parenting of either sex can be to blame since I have one of each gender with and 1 each without...and since it is my oldest and youngest, it cannot be argued that I got better at parenting as I went along.....

I truly believe that if changing parenting strategies and/or diet erases the ADHD symptoms, it was never ADHD to begin with....

Sorry it is just my opinion and I have a unique situation in which I formed my opinion.....My children are over 15 years apart in age oldest to youngest.....

LOL I had to laugh at the "cow manure" comment.  Too funny! I had a planned C-section and she was born 3 weeks early due to my being a diabetic mom.

chasemom I agree with you 100%

well said

Both of my births were natural and fairly quick (no pitocin).  With my oldest I did not even have an epidural. (believe me I wished I did!) He is the one with adhd.  My other son seems fine.

My sisters kids, both now in there teens were both induced with pitocin and neither have ANY adhd whatsover.

I really don't want to make anyone upset or mad, but I really think that there is no real link as far as pregnancy, birth/method of birth, breastfeeding, etc.....

I do not believe that any of these things affect ADHD any more than they affect eye color, hair color, or any other genetically disposed feature...I believe that true ADHD is genetic, and nothing can be done before, during or after to change it.  Other things can cause ADHD symptoms, but....true ADHD is inherited, simple fact.

My first one was induced.  He wasn't keeping up in weight.  My second was suppose to be induced he was two weeks late.  But the hospital called and told me to wait til morning to come in they were busy.  Five minutes later my water broke.  So they had to take me anyway.  My oldest is inattentive adhd and my youngest is adhhhhd.

I had my son 6wks early and they first tried to send me into labor with pitocin all that did was gave me 2 days of contractions and then I had to have a csection because other than contractions nothing was happening.

I also had 4 steroid shots a day for the last month so that his lungs would be developed. Wonder if that has anything to do with him now.

Both of my ADHD children (as well as the non ADHDers) came on their own, natural births, no epidurals, event the 10 pounder...

Chasesmom, while I appreciate your comment, I do believe that our environment and technology do play a large part in the plethora of illness we see in kids today.

I would do so much differently if I knew what I know now, back when I was younger.  I would take a much more homeopathic approach to life.  While I am incorporating it now, some damage cannot be undone by nature.

I have read and heard by more than one DR that it can either be genetic or it can also be caused in premies from the brain not fully developing in the uterus.  I believe that some of my sons came from genetic (even though the only person in my family with any of this history is one of my cousins) and I believe that some of it came from Ethan being born 6wks premature.

Induced with pitosin Ds has ADHHHD!! long labor! didnot crawl long at all, had multiple ultrasounds (5?) lots of ear infections and antibiotcs, Dad has possible ADHD - never dx!

Who knows what the cause is but I hope some day they will have more effective ways of treating it.

For now I will do everything in my power to make life well for my child!!

Monkeybutt (interesting choice of screen name! )

I am in agreement that there are many environmental things factoring into our children's behavior and disorders these days.  I also believe ADHD is inherited -- I don't think it is strictly an either/or explanation.  I also think that where a child may be genetically predisposed to having ADHD/autism/etc. that what we did/ate/etc. plays a role in possibly the severity of the disorder itself.  I have been doing a ton of research on vaccinations and it is absolutely frightening!

That said, I WAS induced with pitocin for the birth of my child with ADHD.

anyone else see a reoccuring theme here?

YES adhd, autism can be naturally occuring disorders, but I truly believe that our "advancements" have contributed to the rise in them.

Im not sure if I said this earlier Meg, but I wouldn't give my kids immunizations today knowing what I know.  They will not be getting any more unless they are injured and need a tetanus shot.  My oldest will be due to get a meningitis vaccine in HS.  (It will soon be mandatory) and I will sign an exemption for her.

Glad you liked the name!   Monkeybutt is what I call my youngest.  Shes my little monkey always making noise, climbing and playing.

My son was hyperactive in utero. It felt like he was playing a football game lol I had two children, both C sections and induced labor. One has adhd and one doesn't but it was pretty apparent even before my son popped out!No pitocin here...Pat was induced, but after 18 hours of labor they did a c-section.  He was trying to back up while I was pushing.  I talked with the neuropsych familiar with my son's history and he said that a lack of oxygen during birth could cause it.  It made perfect sense to me because oxygen deprivation during birth can cause tons of problems, why not ADD/ADHD?  I think heredity also plays a part, but I know plenty of ADHD kids with organized, focused parents.   It is weird but I am thinking maybe it is familial?  I have a grandmother who I would say is border line BP, a mom with anxiety issues, me - well I am sure there is lots there also.  I am not sure about my son's biological father cause opped out of the loop as soon as the pregnancy was discovered, but it wouldn't suprise me.  All in all I think I am pretty lucky I have one that is somewhat normal.  As far as vaccine, I did let my kids have the important ones DTAP, HIB, HEP A and PCV but some of the others I opted out on.  I did have one doctor tell us to stay away from red dye #5 because it can make hyperactivity worse, no for sure on my part but worth a shot.

My SD was delivered via c-section after her mother didn't dialate past 4cm and developed a high fever. My SD was born with a fever and taken to the NICU for 3 days. She also developed a severe case of RSV when she was 6mths old and spent two weeks in the hospital. She is BP/ADHD.

I can't really say if any of the is contriubted to her disorders though because her mother's side of the family has a strong history of mental illness. Bipolar runs rampant throughout most of that side. Many of my SD's cousins have been dx'ed as ADHD, however I think a couple may also be BP but undx'ed.

Hi guys,

I've been dealing with DS' issues for four years now...

I used to drive myself crazy looking for a reason to his hyper behavior. He has Sensory Processing Disorder, the one that resembles ADHD...

I thought about possibilities, and even posted questions on this site as y'all are doing. My possible "culprits":

- DS had a bad pneumonia that kept him in the hospital for 2 weeks, at 22 months. He ran fevers between 102-105 F for the whole two weeks, even under a combination of anti-fever medicines... Was under tons of antibiotics for months. Then again, he never had a seizure or anything like that.

- I took care great care of myself during pregnancy diet-wise, but Dr. okayed that I consummed Splenda, Equal, etc. He also allowed me to do highlights on my hair, saying that today's hair colors don't contain harmful substances any more.

- Truth be told, 2 of my 4 siblings have similar issues, and my mom, too. My hubby's nephew was totally hyper and at 18 y.o., he can't focus or prioritize things correctly. We always thought that his mother didn't know how to set limits on him, now I see he was exactly like my son is today, and believe me, I am a most consistent parent.

In short, I think there are genetic traits there, but I don't discard the possibility that external factors could make things worse for them.

Oh, and yes, my pregnancy was induced, too.
